SPTC addresses non-registered property owners and those owing taxes
In early October of this year, the Government of Belize (GOB) announced that it would be implementing the Land Tax Amnesty Programme, after it was passed by the House of Representatives and approved by the Senate in September. While the programme served as an engine to write off millions of dollars in taxes, it also offers the opportunity for land owners who owe property taxes to settle or manage the arrears within a period of six months beginning from October 2019. The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) was approached regarding this Land Tax Amnesty Programme, and they have clarified that this regulation does not apply to municipalities, and anyone owing property tax to the SPTC must meet their obligations and clear their arrears as soon as possible.

Butterflies Of Belize
Did you know that Belize is home to 700 species of butterflies and that there are five major butterfly farms? You might ask why, but first, here are some important facts about the butterfly life cycle and the types of habitats in which they thrive. Belize has a low population density and lots of open vegetation and wildflowers. Also, it is still customary for people to keep gardens and vegetable plots. Since butterflies are pollinators, they are good for gardens, and gardens are good for them. Their life span is short and they are fragile creatures. From egg to pupae they require heat and in the caterpillar stage, they must eat like machines in order to survive.

The Belize Flag
There is a special reason why the flag of Belize is one of a kind. It is the only flag in all the world depicting human beings. Belize became independent in 1981. The party in power at that time was the PUP (People’s United Party) and the UDP (United Democratic Party). Their party colors were blue and red respectively. Prior to the date set for Independence, the government launched a competition for a flag for the new nation of Belize. The competition was open to the public and sponsored by a bi-partisan committee—The National Symbols Committee. Several designs were submitted and the committee decided on one design proffered by two Public Officers, Mr. Everal Waight, Permanent Secretary, and Mr. Inez Sanchez, Chief Education Officer. Waight had been head of Radio Belize, the only station at that time.

UNHCR welcomes commitment by Central American states and Mexico to address forced displacement
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the commitment by six Central American countries and Mexico to strengthen their efforts to address and prevent forced displacement in their region, in line with the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility set out in the Global Compact on Refugees. Violence and persecution in the region continue to drive growing numbers of people across borders in search of safety. Over 53,000 new asylum applications were submitted worldwide by citizens of countries in northern Central America during 2019, an 86% increase on the same period in 2018. By mid-2019, the number of refugees and asylum seekers from northern Central America had risen to nearly 387,000. In addition, 97,000 Nicaraguans have been uprooted by persecution, the vast majority, almost 80 per cent, currently hosted by Costa Rica.

‘To hell with it’: She ditched Canada at 56 for Belize, where a couple can get ‘everything you could imagine’ for under $50,000 a year
Marlene “Mar” Houghton never wanted a conventional life. “Adventure — that’s what makes my heart sing,” the now-63-year-old, former British Columbia resident tells MarketWatch. So when she happened across a story online about Belize being the next hot retirement destination about seven years ago, she almost immediately booked a flight. “I got to Belize and fell in love. It’s raw — not like Hawaii or Mexico — people are very nice, it’s English-speaking. I just found it so fascinating and thought this might be an interesting place to do a coffee shop,” Houghton tells MarketWatch, adding that she’d wanted to open a coffee shop abroad for years because she’d found it was often hard to find a good cup of coffee when traveling.

  • Indigo snake rescue - ACES Belize, 1min. Until this day, every snake call we have received has been for the harmless (but sometimes large) boa constrictors commonly seen on San Pedro. This week, though, we had the incredible pleasure of meeting this gentle indigo snake! This stunning snake had crawled into a bodega of someone’s home, so we collected her for relocation to a more adequate snake habitat. She appeared slightly underweight due to possible dehydration, so under the guidance of wildlife vet Dr. Isabelle Paquet-Durand, we held her for a few hours to rehydrate. By mid-afternoon, her body appeared to be of a healthier weight, she was active and ready to go on her merry way.
