San Pedro Celebrates Garifuna Settlement Day

Activities leading up to Garifuna Settlement Day are taking place all across Belize. On Ambergris Caye, the San Pedro Branch of the National Garifuna Council has been active throughout the month. Our island correspondent has the details.

The drumming and dancing on various streets of San Pedro Town has vehicles and pedestrians coming to a halt to enjoy a sneak peak of the Garifuna culture. The all day drumming is an annual event on the island where dancers and drummers make stops at various businesses and hotels to do half hour performances. It is one the highlights leading up to Garifuna Settlement Day activities on the island. Eden Velasquez is the San Pedro branch president of the National Garifuna Council.

Eden Velasquez, San Pedro National Garifuna Council Branch President: "Today as part of the president of the NGC San Pedro Branch we'll be having all day drumming, we'll be going to different establishments to have the drumming. Tonight we will be having activities at the Central Park, we started at 8am and we also have the Larubeya Band from Belize City. Tomorrow our ceremony will start at 10:30am so after our ceremony we'll be having a small parade around town."

Garifuna Settlement Day 2019 - Yurumein in Punta Gorda Belize

The Yurumein as it is called in Garifuna, occurs at 6:00am local time in Dangriga and Punta Gorda on November 19 of each year depicts the incoming arrival of the largest group of Garinagu people to Belize. Mr. Darius Avila and Mr. Luke Palacio giving a detailed explanation of the history of the people and their arrival to Belize.

GARIFUNA SETTLEMENT DAY PARADE - PUNTA GORDA, BELIZE

One of the largest cultural celebrations in Belize is Garifuna Settlement Day. This is held annually and takes place on the 19th of November. The day commemorates the arrival of the largest Garinagu group to Belizean shores in 1823. It starts with the re-enactment of the historic journey of the "Yuruemein". It is a public re-enactment of the epic journey of the Garifuna people from their homeland in St. Vincent to Roatan Honduras, then to the shores of Belize. Yuruemein is a Garifuna word which means "homeland"and it is re-enacted in every major community where the Garinagu reside and presents itself as one of Belize's prominent cultural celebrations.

Garifuna Settlement Day is celebrated for the entire week including parades, live music, drumming, dancing and prayers. The first landing of the Garifuna is reenacted with boats coming ashore carrying cassava sticks, plantain suckers and sugarcane representing the food the Garifuna people bought with them.

This is the celebration as we saw it. It's one of my favorite days I've experienced on this planet.

Wanaragua / Jankunu Dance Belize, Dangriga

This is a satirical Garifuna dance called the Wanaragua or Jankunu Dance captured in Belize and performed in the Culture Capital Dangriga Town. This was done in 2016. This generation is all grown up, priceless young faces!

San Pedro observes Garifuna Settlement Day

The festivities started on Monday evening, November 18th, when the celebration was officially declared open. Traditional dances and an all-night drumming session took place at Central Park. Belizeans and visitors alike stopped by a tent erected at the park to enjoy an evening of traditional drumming and Punta music. There were no formalities as in previous years, where the Mayor and even the Area Representative of Belize Rural South (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Cayes), would take part in an official opening ceremony.

Early the next day, the historical re-enactment of the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize via boats was performed on the beach at Central Park. Dressed in traditional clothing, participants brought with them native plants and played their drums just as their ancestors did. After disembarking on the beach, they proceeded to parade through the main streets of San Pedro, drumming, dancing, and singing. Ending at Central Park, the group attended a short mass/blessing held at the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church.
