Belize Beats French Guiana 2-0
The Belize Jaguars faced off with French Guiana on Thursday night in Belmopan in the CONCACAF Nation’s League. At the end of the ninety-minute game, Belize won two-nil. An early goal by Ian Lewis and a second goal by Deon McCaulay secured the win for Belize. You may recall, Belize was not able to travel to French Guiana in early September for that country’s home game, and had to forfeit that match. But the team showed up and showed out last night. According to the coach of the national team, the French Guiana team was a formidable opponent but the Belize Jaguars played hard and smart. Here’s more from the team and the F.F.B.
Vincenzo Alberto Annese, Coach, Belize National ‘A’ Team
“They have six or seven players that play in the professional league in France and England. The rank in FIFA for French Guiana is 141 if I am not mistaken. We played once again a strong team. I know that their quality was right back and left back and they played with 4-2-3-1 that they like to switch it up to right and left side of the field to make the field more open space to the winds. We covered well our middle and Ian Lewis and Hamilton did a really good job.”
Ian Lewis, Midfielder/Goal Scorer
“The game was intense and the goal that I was scored was at least like three minutes into the game. I saw the play because the next midfielder – I saw when he pushed the ball and I reached and tried my best to finish and get the goal. To me the team controlled the game position wise but the goal that McCaulay scored that is when I know the game was over because that killed them. We worked hard and put that on the training ground and the coach came with a strategy and we execute.”
Marlon Kuylen, Vice-President, F.F.B.
“It has been a while since I have seen Team Belize played so well. But our backs were against the wall and we had to win that game last night and so with that win we are now placing second in that group and so it was a huge win for us.”
