Annual Adopt a Bear to bring joy to island children for the fifth year
For the fifth consecutive year, the ‘Adopt a Bear’ initiative is back on the island for the Christmas season. The project, sponsored by the Raise Me Up Foundation, gives individuals in the community the opportunity to gift a Christmas present to one child whose parents are not able to do so during the holidays. The program involves residents and visitors choosing a bear ornament from a Christmas tree at participating locations. The bear is labeled with the first name, gender, and age of a child, as well as their dream gift. By adopting a bear, the giver is committed to purchasing three items for the respective child; something they need, an educational item, and their wish gift written on the bear.

Busy Season on Ambergris Caye
It is starting to become “busy season” on Ambergris Caye. Not only do the tourists start returning much to the pleasure of business owners, but by this, I mean it gets very busy as we lead up to Christmas in Belize. Events and invitations are popping up daily, pretty soon we will be able to take all the island events and make an Island holiday Advent calendar.

Steel Pan Music
Very often in movies that have a Caribbean country as their backdrop, you can hear the tinkly, tinny cadence of a steel band in the background. The steel band is synonymous with Caribbean culture, and Belize is no exception. In general, music is part of everyone’s life story and connects us with events and memories in our lives. Steel Pans are a sound, a special language that draws one in. Since Belize straddles both Latino and Creole culture, these influences and sounds are incorporated into our music.

Belizean Lemon Pie
Belizean lemon pie has been a dessert treasured by most families; most people grew up on this dessert. A store-bought lemon pie cannot come close to the deliciousness of a homemade treat. And as delicious as they are, they’re easy to make. For a lemon pie specifically, it has to have a pure lemon flavor, but it also needs to be silky smooth. Flavors of Belize’s Belizean Lemon Pie recipe definitely covers both.

Orange Walk and The Role of The Catholic Church 1876
In 1881 Orange Walk was established as a separate district from Corozal. At this time a large number of Mestizo Yucatecans were added to the primarily white and creole population. This dramatic influx of Spanish and Mestizo Catholics met with a corresponding increase in the activity of the church in Orange Walk. Although the people of the New River had been served by various priests on a missionary basis, they now welcomed their first pastor, Father Alphonse Parisi, an Italian Jesuit (sent by the church in the Yucatan). He served Orange Walk from 1875 to 1880. His church, which had been built sometime before 1872, was a simple thatched structure located near the present Pallotine convent. Several years before his arrival, it had served the soldiers as a barracks.

Weather in Belize
When going on vacation, the type of weather can ultimately determine what kind of vacation you will have. Belize has a subtropical climate and similar to other countries in Central America, there are two seasons – wet and dry. The wet season or hurricane season in Belize is from June to November, while the dry season is December to May. Normally I would suggest that coming to Belize is perfect any time of the year, but if you are trying to avoid certain types of weather then here’s what you can expect.

Barton Creek Cave in Belize
Belize is filled with well-known caves that draw adventurers and explorers every year. Among them is Barton Creek, one of the most beautiful and mysterious caves in the country. Barton Creek Cave consists of massive passages covered with several large speleothems over a navigable river, and these features of the cave have made it a popular cave tour in western Belize. Archaeologists have found artifacts inside Barton Creek Cave that date from the years 200 AD to 900 AD.

Belize in Film
Last month the Belize International Film Festival kicked off another successful week of films. Belize’s first and only film festival is quickly gaining popularity in the realm of international film. This year especially, it was the Belizean films that were getting the most buzz. The directors of the films this year were delving into themes that had more social consciousness and commentary. The film festival opened on Wednesday, Nov, 8th. However, Friday night belonged to the Belizean short films and this is where Belizean directors shone.

New Jaguar Sanctuary
Jaguars are the largest and most threatened wildcats in the Americas. Belize is already involved since our Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in the Stann Creek District is well known throughout the world. It is a protected area where Jaguars are free to prowl, especially at night. However, we need to do more. Officials from the conservation group Panthera, based in Brazil, have met with officials from the government of Belize to declare 7,000 acres of a key Jaguar habitat near the capital, Belmopan, as an additional protected area.

Rum Punch – Taste of the Tropics
Rum Punch is a refreshing rum-based beverage that is found in many different tropical locations from the Caribbean to Hawaii. This cocktail is great all year long and a Belizean favorite! It’s the most popular cocktail in the region. It is quick and easy to make, but more importantly, it is so tasty. Rum punch is simply rum with added fruit juice. The recipe to make a rum punch usually consists of rum (dark, light, or coconut) and lots of fruit juice such as orange juice, pineapple, lemon or lime juice, and grenadine for color. These can sometimes be swapped out and the amounts may vary, but these are essentially the basic ingredients to make a rum punch.
