A record $43,500 raised for Living Word Church’s 2019 Toy Drive
Once again, Living Word Church’s (LWC) annual toy distribution event promises to be a huge success and reach more children than ever before. Attorney Joel Nagel, who is a long-time Belizean citizen and the chairman of the board of LWC, challenged several companies to raise $BZ35,000. Nagel & Associates, Caye International Bank, ECI Development, Georgetown Trust, and Escape Artist rose to the challenge. They not only met their collective goal but exceeded it by more than $BZ8,500! The toy distribution event, which will include dolls, trucks, balls, and games, will be held at 6PM on December 23, 2019, at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex in downtown San Pedro. The evening promises to be one of good spirit, joy, and the smiling faces of many children. The toys were purchased from the Mirab Department Store in Belize City as well as from local stores in San Pedro, including A&R and Caye Supplies.
Unemployment rate on a rise: SIB reports 10.4% of Belize’s labour force without jobs
As the year winds down, The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is reporting that the national unemployment rate continues to grow. According to their most recent Labour Force Survey (LFS) in September of 2019, the national unemployment rate grew from 7.7% in April 2019 to 10.4% in September 2019. SIB goes on to report that Belize’s labour force is growing faster than the rate at which new jobs are being created. Belize is approximate to have a national labour force of around 190,307 with 56% being male while 42% are women. Astoundingly close to half, 44% of those in the labour force have nothing more than a primary level education, while 25% have a secondary level education and only about 17% have tertiary or high level studies.
Belize on an Economic Activity Decline
As of the third quarter of 2019, the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is reporting a decline in economic activity for the county of Belize. A 0.4% decline rate was observed in the country’s total level of economic activity in the period of July to September 2019 when compared to the same time bracket in 2018. This decline in revenue has left economist wondering if Belize can possibly fall into recession. According to SIB, “the total value of goods and services produced within Belize during this period was estimated at $649.2 million dollars, a decrease of $2.4 million from the $651.6 million produced in the third quarter of 2018.” Both the primary and secondary industry sectors experienced a decrease in production.
