2019’s Tourism Site of the Year
As a site frequently visited for both its inherent natural and cultural value, historical value, and natural beauty, Half Moon Caye Natural Monument took home the Belize Tourism Board’s 2019 Tourism Site of the Year at the 17th Annual Tourism Awards in late October. Fifty-five miles from Belize City is Belize’s easternmost territory, where visitors can be the first in the country to see the sunrise at Half Moon Caye Natural Monument (HMCNM). Designated a Crown Reserve (1928) and the 1st Protected Area (1982), HMCNM is Belize’s oldest site for wildlife protection. The token lighthouse on the island is nearly 90 years old (dated from 1930), built on the base of the previous 1848 structure, which itself replaced the first one built-in 1820. Today, the historic lighthouse has given way to age and the elements, with remnants amongst coral rubble on its coastline. There are also a number of shipwrecks in the caye’s vicinity – the most prominent of which is a large freighter that can be seen on approach.

Terryl Godoy/Artist
Terryl Godoy is a gentle, soft-spoken gentleman who lives in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. He is both Musician and Painter, turning out art for 23 years. In his early career as a painter, Terryl was known as “Man at Work.” He could be seen on the streets of Belize carrying his easel and tools, painting in the open air to capture the light and atmosphere of the city. He painted streets and old buildings. The streets were his office for what he considered to be his full-time job. Terryl goes straight to his subject. He has no studio/no gallery uses no palette, preferring instead to mix his paints in his hand. He doesn’t do portraits, and all his paintings are first drafts, no sketching, just going straight to his subject with paints. His goal is to preserve the culture and look of Belize City. Indeed his street scenes give the sense that one could step right into them.

How Jay-Z and Diddy’s careers almost collapsed in 1999
The six-week Club New York trial, which kicked off in January 2001, became a national media obsession. Combs was represented by Benjamin Brafman and Johnnie Cochran, the biggest-name lawyers money could buy. It paid off when he was acquitted. Barrow, 21, however, was convicted of two counts of assault as well as reckless endangerment and gun possession. Some conspiracy theorists speculate Barrow was a fall guy. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, serving nine before being deported to Belize, where his father is the prime minister. Although he released a mixtape in 2001, his career never recovered.
