NTUCB demands GOB to implement the UNCAC by the end of February
The Government of Belize signed the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in December 2016 to assure Belizeans of its commitment to fight corruption. However, almost four years later, UNCAC remains unimplemented, triggering the dissatisfaction of several organizations, including the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB). This organization alleges that widespread corruption in government is what keeps the UNCAC from being implemented and have called on the current leaders to enact it or else face the consequences.

The MOH expressed via an email that the common flu is much more deadly than the Coronavirus. According to an online medical journal, the seasonal flu kills as many as 646,000 persons worldwide each year and should be treated as a serious medical issue.

Andre Vega’s Case Heads to the Court of Appeal
The questionable land transaction deal made by Andre Vega, son of former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, reaches a turning point as his attorney Estevan Perera filed an appeal on his behalf. To date, Andre Vega has not paid back any of the compensation the government of Belize erroneously awarded him. The compensation stems from Vega’s and attorney at law Sharon Pitts’ acquisition of the land, even though one Mr. Miguel Valencia privately owned it. Once the error was realized, the GOB compensated both Vega and Pitts $400,000 each in an attempt to reacquire the land.

If you arrive on Sunday, you'll find most businesses closed, although a few of the small restaurants and general stores will be open. There are very few tourists, so it is a good place to see Belize off the beaten track, and consequently, accommodation, food and drink, and other items are cheaper than in better-known places.

Drought and hunger: why thousands of Guatemalans are fleeing north
The threat of famine and the battle for dwindling natural resources are increasingly being recognised as major factors in the exodus. Martina García grinds just enough maize kernels to make a handful of tortillas which she serves to her children and grandson for breakfast with a sprinkling of salt. García, 40, must ration the family’s last few sacks of tiny corncobs after drought and prolonged heatwaves linked to the climate emergency devastated crops across Guatemala. As a result, record numbers of subsistence farming families are going hungry: health officials registered more than 15,300 cases of acute malnutrition in children under five last year – up nearly 24% from 2018. It’s the highest number of acute malnutrition cases since 2015, when a severe drought destroyed harvests across Central America.

A favorite vacation destination
We've visited most of Europe, North Africa, several of the former eastern European countries, Mexico, Canada, Central America, and Brazil. Our trips have always been a pleasure, but there is a special country we keep going back to: Belize. Here's why: In 1972, while living in Corpus Christi, I had some oil royalty to sell, so I contacted a buyer in Houston. After the sale, he mentioned having just returned from a vacation. "Where'd you go?" Belize, he said. He described a great experience, and after I returned home, Vertis and I were intrigued. Several airlines fly the two-hour flights to Belize City out of Houston. In Belize City, you change planes to a puddle-hopper and 30 minutes later you're in San Pedro, a town of about 1,000 people located on the barrier island of Ambergris Caye.

Treasure Valley travel tale: Belize!
We’d been snorkeling and fishing just beyond a coral reef a couple miles off the Belizean Coast. Just out of sight lay the small fishing village of Hopkins. Sunlight danced along the water as our small wooden fishing boat gently rocked in the clear, blue of the Caribbean. Below, a school of yellow snapper toyed with the sardines that bated our fishing lines. Already, lunch — a catch of snapper and maceral — flopped in five-gallon buckets on the floor of the boat. Suddenly, son-in-law Ryan hollered that something big was on his line. Captain Bert, our local guide and fisherman, shouted instructions. “Don’t jerk like that! You’ll lose it. Jerk the line NOW, Ryan! Jerk! Yes, like that! Give it some line! now bring it in. No! Not like that! Let the rod do the work.”

Feeling Eternally Young on the Sittee River, Belize
My wife, Dolly, and I were in our early 50s when we decided to retire to Central America. We were wildlife photographers and, having spent the best part of 20 years working in Europe and Africa, the American continent beckoned. Belize caught our attention, and held it. It had the stand-out advantage that, as a former British colony, English was its first language. The following year we were on a plane. Just a short vacation, we envisaged, to see what Belize had to offer. A trip down the Sittee River in a small fishing skiff sealed our fate. Morelet’s crocodiles watched us glide by, terrapin heads rose to greet us, parrots flew overhead. Everywhere we looked, huge orange iguanas lay strewn across tree branches, and every palm frond had a night heron or an egret perched upon it. We were surrounded by pristine wildlife that didn’t care about us. That’s a wildlife photographer’s paradise.
