Belize Electricity Limited informs customers in Caye Caulker that a new 1705kW capacity generation unit sourced from Panama is scheduled to arrive in Belize by February 3 and transported to the island by February 7. Our teams will install the unit within a week.

A 4-hour power outage will be necessary to commission the unit. Customers will be informed of the date and time in advance.

The addition of the unit will increase BEL's generation capacity to meet the demand for power in Caye Caulker and ensure quality and consistent power supply to our customers.

Re: New Generation Unit for Caye Caulker in Transit to Belize: BEL Bringing The Big Unit To Caye Caulker

We've reported extensively on the power problems on Caye Caulker. Well, island residents will be getting another blackout, but this one for a good cause.
BEL says that its new 1,705 kilowatt generator from Panama, arrived in the country on Sunday.

It will be ferried to the island by Friday, February 7th and will be installed as part of the island's electricity infrastructure within a week.

To do this, however, islanders will have to prepare for a 4-hour power outage to commission the unit. BEL says that customers will be informed of the date and time in advance.

They assure that with the addition of this unit, their electricity generation capacity will increase so that they can reliably meet the peak power demands of Caye Caulker.

BEL Installs New Generation Unit for Caye Caulker

[Linked Image]Customers of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) in Caye Caulker will soon benefit from a new 1705kW capacity generation unit that arrived on the island early this morning. The unit was sourced from Panama in January to provide increased generation capacity and reliability of power supply.

BEL teams have commenced preparations to connect the unit to the power system and conduct testing for 48 hours with the island's load. During testing. BEL teams will continue to monitor and make necessary adjustments to ensure the unit operates consistently and efficiently.

With the addition of the new unit. BEL's generation capacity for the island will be 4.1MW compared to the current capacity of 3.1MW.

Once the new unit is operational. maintenance works will commence on the other generation units supplying Caye Caulker and the additional unit that was locally sourced in January will be removed from the system.

The Company expects to commission the new unit during the upcoming weekend - three days earlier than previously anticipated.

BEL Update on Service Improvements for Caye Caulker Customers

[Linked Image]Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) continues to deliver on its commitment to improve services to customers in Caye Caulker through ongoing system upgrades and by increasing its generation capacity for the island.

Since November 2019, the Company has installed seven higher capacity transformers in areas with a high demand for electricity. These new transformers enable BEL to better manage supply to residences and businesses and serve the increasing demand brought on by the rapid pace of commercial development on the island.

The newly installed generation unit for Caye Caulker will increase BEL's generation capacity to 4.1MW. This is 70% more than the island's peak demand, and is well above international standards for electricity generation supply to small insular communities. Load testing and fine-tuning of the unit started on Wednesday, February 19, one week later than originally scheduled, and is expected to continue through to February 25. During this time, customers may experience intermittent supply fluctuations and outages.

Once the new generation unit is fully operational, maintenance works will commence on the other units supplying Caye Caulker and are programmed to continue until the end of April. The total generation capacity for the island will therefore fluctuate while the units are taken out of commission for servicing; however, the remaining firm generation capacity will be sufficient to meet peak demand during this time.

BEL is also keeping the community abreast of these developments and met with the Caye Caulker Village Council on Friday, February 14 to provide updates on the Company's ongoing and upcoming projects to ensure a safe, reliable and sustainable service to customers.
