The San Pedro Sun
Lobster season closes February 15th
San Pedro resident and fisherman Billy Melgar has been actively fishing for three years and said he felt this season wasn’t as good as the previous one. He told The San Pedro Sun that his catches were not as abundant as in previous seasons and believes this is a result of illegal fishing done during the closed season. He further stated that the closed season should be longer as a proposed solution. Jair, another fisherman, said he experienced a similar decrease in the catch, but he personally felt like enforcement was strict, as he and his colleagues have seen the consequences imposed rather quickly on lawbreakers. They said they adhere to the regulations as it’s beneficial for the entire fishing community. The San Pedro Sun will follow up with this story when the Fisheries Department issues its official numbers at the closing of the season.

THE MAYA WARRIOR CODE
In order to understand the Maya warrior code, it is helpful to first understand that their military was actually much more complex than most people may realize. Each city-state had its own army, but the structure and hierarchy in each city was fairly similar. At the head of each war band was a chief, known as a nacom, who was elected to a three year term by the other warriors. Most of the warriors were holcans, who were full-time, professionals. Besides the actual system, and more important than it, were the actual values and beliefs that the average Maya warrior followed.

Fantastic Location, Friendly and Comfortable: White Sands Cove Resort
A turn at the sign and down a long sandy driveway – this is a big property and a hotel that has been around for about 20 years.
I stepped into the office – and found the next thing I really like in an Ambergris Caye hotel – super friendly staff who really care about the spot.
We went out to sit by the pool bar and restaurant – so I could hear about the amenities and tours as well as get a feel for the area. There are actually quite a few restaurants and bars within easy walking distance like Aji Restaurant and the new Capricorn.
Chan Chich Lodge – A Unique Jungle Lodge In Belize
Chan Chich (Little Bird in Mayan), is a prime example of private conservation efforts in Belize, as far back as the 80’s. It is different because, although privately owned, it serves the purpose of preserving the ecology and wildlife of the northwestern part of the country. It boggles the mind that a modern jungle resort sits smack in the middle of 30,000 acres of wilderness, surrounded by half a million acres of conservation lands. Here the wildlife opportunity is believed to be the best in the Americas.
Chan Chich has a fascinating back story, with the late Sir Barry Bowen at its center. He had a vision without which Chan Chich would not exist. In the decades before our Independence of 1981, the Belize Estate and Produce Company had been exploiting Belize’s valuable chicle and hardwood for export. Sir Barry Manfield Bowen K.CM.G., a seventh-generation Belizean entrepreneur, purchased the holdings of the B.E.P. Company. In order to survey his purchase, Sir Barry led an expedition into the then remote, practically inaccessible jungle of northwest Belize.
Cast Mesoamerican Coral Reef’s Health Index Declines After Years of Improvement
The health of the world’s second-largest coral system, the Mesoamerican Reef spreading from Mexico to Central America, has taken a turn for the more severe and faces additional threats from climate change, based on a report by a group of scientists.
The Reef Health Index (RHI), which incorporates ecological data into a “Dow Jones”-style index, confirmed that the coral’s rating had fallen to 2.5 in 2018 from 2.8 in its earlier rating report in 2016.
The Mesoamerican Reef’s health had been enhancing since 2006 when scientists first started giving ratings to measure its general condition and awarded it a 2.3 rating that year.
The largest drop in reef health was due to significant decreases in commercial and herbivorous fish on the back of unsustainable fishing activities, particularly in Honduras, the report’s authors stated.
Authorities in Belize believe top suspect in Roanoke doctor's killing is dead
Authorities in Belize say the top suspect in last summer’s killing of a Carilion Clinic doctor is believed to be dead.
Dr. Gary Swank was on vacation when he and his Belize guide, Mario Graniel , were found fatally shot on a lagoon while fishing in the town of San Pedro on June 23.
On Feb. 6, Commissioner Chester Williams of the Belize Police Department told The San Pedro Sun the unnamed prime suspect in the case had been killed in Guatemala.
Police officer forms basketball team for at-risk kids, transforming their lives
It all started when Los Angeles police officer Ivan Lombard-Jackson was out on patrol and started playing basketball with a 7-year-old.
"After awhile, I asked him if he would like to join a basketball team," Lombard-Jackson said. "He told me at the time, 'Hell yeah!' And at that point, I was like, 'Well, we'll work on your language later.'"
Because there wasn't a team, the officer gathered donations, created one and signed up with a park league.
"We ended up going undefeated," he said.
Lombard-Jackson played basketball in college and eventually played professionally in Belize, Central America.
