Coming Soon! Carnaval Photographic Exhibition @ the San Pedro House of Culture. Friday, February 21st, 2020 @ 7 pm.
The San Pedro House of Culture invites you to the Juan Carnaval Exhibition.
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) is committed to the education, promotion, and safeguarding of Belize's cultural heritage. In this light, it is important to educate our younger generations on the importance of the tangible and intangible aspects of culture. One such Mestizo intangible heritage is known as "Juan Carnaval" or "Carnaval", which was a popular celebration carried out in the northern districts of Belize. San Pedro is still one of the few places in Belize where one can experience the unique cultural event.
This tradition is celebrated three days before Ash Wednesday, ushering in the Lenten season. "Carnaval" is a significant tradition carried out by individuals, groups, and communities as a living practice of their beliefs. "Carnaval" in the island consists of groups performing dances, dramatizations, and plays targeting a current social issue within the community. These performances are known as "Comparsas".
