Belize is one of the First Countries to Support New Global Alliance “30by30”
The 30by30 initiative is a call to action for at least a 30% target of the global ocean to be under protected status as marine protected areas by the year 2030. This call was first made by the Government of the United Kingdom at the United Nations General Assembly last year, at which Belize was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Wilfred Elrington.

Action movie to be filmed in San Pedro Town
The first Belizean action feature film is set to be produced in San Pedro Town by three Belizean filmmakers. Titled ‘Machiste’s Gold’, the film is expected to be a high-end production, highlighting Belizean talent, and shaped by the services of an international filming crew that will see the end product compatible with international standards.

Belize is removed from the EU List of Harmful Preferential Tax Regimes
The Government of Belize has been informed that the recent amendments to both the Income and Business Tax Act and Tax Administrative and Procedure Act on December 23rd have been positively assessed and the ECOFIN Council has agreed to remove Belize from the EU list of harmful preferential tax regimes (Annex II).

One of Belize’s senior and top attorneys, Lisa Shoman was selected to be a judge of the independent regional judicial tribunal, Caribbean Community Administrative Tribunal (CCAT).

The village of Riversdale calls for an immediate removal of a road that was layed on top of black creek north of the village . No consultation with the village you blocked and entire creek that’s at some places are 100 ft in width and over 25 feet in depth with a huge lagoon that opens up. Home to so many different species of land and marine creatures.

FAKE COVID-19 NEWS According to DIrector of Health Services
Director of Health Services for Belize Doctor Marvin Manzanero has said that there are no suspect cases of COVID-19 and there are absolutely no cases of the virus. But that has not stopped a fear campaign of fake news. So far 82 persons have shared a post from a Facebook group claiming there are COVID-19 cases in Belize. The post was made by a profile account with the name Daniel Sukpen with friends in Africa and none in Belize. The "suck pen" individual has also turned off commenting on the post.

First National Spanish Spelling Bee for High Schools
The first ever National Spanish Spelling Bee for High Schools was held at Sacred Heart College Auditorium on 21st February, 2020. The idea originated was few years ago as an inter school competition at Our Lady of Guadalupe High School in Belmopan. Last year, a committee was formed and the contest was held comprising 7 high schools in the Cayo District and 1 from the Belize District. This year, the committee ventured to take the initiative to the national level. A total of 15 high schools participated, including schools from Corozal, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts. Students from 1st and 2nd Form competed and at the end of a very rigid competition, Jimena Aguilar from Sacred Heart College emerged as the winner. Beverly Blanco from Mount Carmel High School placed second and Karla Vasquez from Belmopan Methodist High School placed third.

Pueblo Nuevo Ferry closed until Tuesday
Ministry of Works has announced that our Pueblo Nuevo Ferry will need further repairs and therefore, it will re-open on Tuesday, February 25th.

BFREE BZ needs Summer volunteers
BFREE is now accepting applications for summer volunteer field assistants! There are two and three-week options available in June and July. Volunteers will receive training through hands-on field-methods with professional visiting scientists and researchers as well as learn from BFREE staff how a biological research station runs.

Last night, gunshots rang out on Wagner’s Lane shortly before midnight, claiming the life of Shane Budram, a longtime resident of the street.Budram, 43, was confirmed dead on arrival at the KHMH.

Shooting on Rio Bravo Crescent leaves 1 dead and 1 hospitalized
Two persons were shot on Rio Bravo Crescent last night. They have been identified as Ezekiel Usher and Joyce Edwards. Usher passed away while undergoing treatment. Edwards remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Police are investigating two reports of rape from early in the weekend, one in Camalote and the other in Cotton Tree. The first report was received before midnight on Friday.

Saturday Night Shooting Leaves 1 Dead
Police are investigating the shooting of three persons in Belize City last night. Just after 10:00 cops were called to the KHMH where they saw Joyce Edwards, 61 and Ezekiel Usher, 33, and a third un-named person suffering from gunshot injuries.

Mike Peyrefitte Is New Minister of National Security
Attorney General, Senator Michael Peyrefitte, who was sworn in two Sundays ago as the UDP’s new Chairman, is also the country’s new Minister of National Security.

BDF Soldier Shot in Belize City
A Belize Defence Force (BDF) soldier who recently passed out during the January intake is hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he was shot multiple times on Monday.

Snorkeling the Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Belize
We didn’t really have any expectations or even a real idea of what we would see, all we knew was that we were not going to miss out on snorkeling the second largest barrier reef in the world … AGAIN! Last year, we only stayed in Caye Caulker for two nights, underestimating how great snorkeling the barrier reef is, we opted to skip it and do the ATM cave on the mainland instead. However, after hearing so many backpackers rave about the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, we regretted not going snorkeling. So when we somehow found ourselves back in Caye Caulker last week, we knew what we had to do!

2020 Atlantic hurricane season: List of tropical cyclone names
On Saturday, it will be exactly 100 days from the start of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. It is never too early to begin preparing: Last year, the first named storm of the season formed ahead of the June 1 start date. The National Hurricane Center has the lists of names for the 2020 through the 2024 seasons.

Belize clinched their first points of the qualifiers when they blanked Saint Martin 4-0 in the other game of the group. Wilfredo Galvez put them ahead in the 21st minute, a lead which held until the half-time whistle. Belize then dominated the second half with Alwin Zelaya doubling his side's advantage in the 68th, Jesse August adding a third in the 76th before Ian Pou put the finishing touches on in the 90th minute.
