After a considerable investment and some good old local ingenuity provided by Gerhard Penner of Shipyard, the Downtown Rejuvenation Project finally got the clock working again after some 20 plus years. Something we all can be proud of. Such a beautiful sound!

You know, it gives me a lot of pleasure to post photos from the works in progress and completed involving our project because for the first two and half years, we did not have much to show from our hard components side of the project. Now, we are rolling them in one after the other.

The completion parade all started with the Yarborough Basketball Court, followed by the Supreme Court renovations, followed by the Cathedral renovations, followed by the human Development Building raze and rebuild, followed by the Ronald Frederick Greenwood House raze and rebuild, followed by Government House (in progress), and then the Belize Heritage Plaza (in progress).

In all of these buildings and renovations, we took on another project that was not on our workplan as part of the Downtown Rejuvenation Project and that was to restore the Supreme Court Clock. Our Director, Mr. John Arana, thought that the project would not be complete if we did not get the historic Supreme Court clock working once again. It seems that when the clock ceased working many years ago, time had stopped in downtown and downtown went into a quandary, so to return downtown into the present and ready for the future and our destiny, It has become paramount that we get the clock working again, or else, we will be stucked in the past.

I am uploading some photos of the renovated clock; however, the average person would not be able to grasp how beautiful it looks now if you never saw how it looked before. The repairs were not only localized to the inner workings of the clock, but also to the structure that supports the cupola/clock. Much of the structure under the cupola had been corroded. Now, the entire structure is ready to withstand the test of time for the next fifty years. The work was carried out by Gerhard Penner and his team from Shipyard.

We can't start to celebrate as yet because the clock is not operational as yet. A key component, which is the brain of the clock, called the Synchronous Drive Unit, is still missing and is on order from a company called Gillett & Johnson (Croydon) Limited. They were the original supplier of the clock.

I will admit that the repairing of the clock has been very expensive, however, hearing the old clock chime or bung, whenever clocks chime and bung, will be something for an old and new generation of Belizean to hear and enjoy.

The Supreme Court Clock chiming once again. We are conducting some maintenance work on it this week because the number of chimes weren't synched to the time of the day. It is a delicate, complicated and precise job.
