Mayor Daniel Guerrero and the San Pedro Town Council hereby informs the general public that preventative measures will be applied in order to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors from the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In agreement with the press conference held yesterday, Monday, March 17, 2020, by the Prime Minister of Belize, Hon. Dean Barrow and the Leader of the Opposition, as they mentioned, “Limit Social Gatherings no more than 100 persons”, the San Pedro Town Council is forced to cancel the following events and activities: Mother’s Day Extravaganza, Teacher’s Day, All Easter events/activities and the International Costa Maya Festival.

Also, in this effect, the San Pedro Town Council will not be granting permission for the use of the Central Park or any public space for any event or activity from now until July. The Ambergris Stadium and the Hon. Louis Sylvester Sports Complex (formerly Saca Chispas Field) will be closed completely to public access. Events and/or activities scheduled for July onwards are to be put on hold until the Government of Belize clears the limit on social gatherings.

In order to further secure our safety, the San Pedro Town Council and the San Pedro Liquor Licensing Board will not be issuing Liquor License extensions to any establishment nor for any private event, effective immediately.

The SPTC kindly asks everyone to keep informed, practice social distancing and practice good hygiene. Please be reminded that schools will be closing on Friday, March 20, 2020, for fourteen days – this is not a vacation.

Mayor Daniel Guerrero and the San Pedro Town Council invites everyone to tune in to the Good Morning San Pedro show on Reef TV, channel 20 or the Reef Radio on 92.3 FM, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, for a message on the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The SPTC kindly asks everyone for their cooperation and understanding during this time.

San Pedro Town braces for COVID-19; holiday and special events cancelled

Following the advice given by Prime Minister Right Honourable Dean Barrow at a joint press conference on Monday, March 16th with Leader of the Opposition Honourable John Briceño on limiting social gatherings to no more than 100 persons, the SPTC was forced to cancel upcoming events. These include all Easter festivities, the Mother’s Day Extravaganza in May, Teacher’s Day and even the International Costa Maya Festival in July/August.

There will be no granting of permits to use Central Park for any event until July. The same goes for the Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex and Ambergris Stadium, which will be closed to the public. This measure will be in effect until the government clears the limit on social gatherings. According to the official message from the SPTC, the San Pedro Liquor Licensing Board will not be issuing liquor license extensions to any establishment nor for any private event.

Mayor Guerrero addressed island residents on Wednesday, March 18th, during the morning talk show on Reef TV. He was accompanied by Health Inspector Christina Martinez and Officer in Charge of the Coastal Executive Unit (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker) Superintendent Christopher Noble. Guerrero stated that the situation has financially impacted the local tourism industry like hotels, restaurants, tour guides, and companies, along with a large part of our residents who depend on tourism. He asks everyone to work together with the local authorities so they can overcome the current situation. “It’s something new, but we are a strong community, we have gotten through tragic situations like hurricanes and fires, and we could get through this one as well,” said Guerrero. The fact that many island residents have been laid off from their jobs has raised alarm. He understands that some employers are trying hard to keep most of their staff, but if there is no tourism, it is challenging for the business owners. He called on the landlords to be considerate with their tenants in case they are faced with the difficult situation of not being able to pay their rent.

They have amended their statement to include the following:
"UPDATE: We apologize for the oversight: bars and clubs will be forced to closed today; however, bars that sell food are allowed to operate, this includes restaurants as well."

UPDATE ON PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TOWARDS THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Mayor Daniel Guerrero and the San Pedro Town Council hereby informs the general public that new preventative measures will be applied, along with the previous measures that were established, in order to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors from the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In agreement with the latest updated release from the Government of Belize, social gatherings will now be limited to twenty five (25) people. In this regard, the SPTC and the Police Formation will be closing bars and clubs, effective immediately. Only bars that sell food are allowed to operate, this includes restaurants as well.

In regards to price gouging, businesses that are increasing their prices on essential items, their trade license will be revoked, if evidence is provided.

The SPTC offices will be limiting its amount of people visiting any of our offices at the same time. A designated waiting area has been established outside of the Town Hall for people awaiting their turn.

Shop, Beer and Convenience Store liquor license holders are advised that consumption of products outside the establishment is completely prohibited.

The public is reminded to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of transmission. The SPTC continues to encourage the washing of hands regularly with soap and running water for at least twenty (20) seconds. When coughing or sneezing, cover the mouth in the inside of elbows or inside a tissue to be disposed immediately. Avoid close contact with persons who have flu-like symptoms. Avoid sharing personal items and disinfect common surfaces.
