Yesterday the Free eBOOK - MAXIMO: The Last Alcalde of San Jose Yalbac was made available for all Belizeans to read. One of the co-authors, Delmer Tzib, was more than happy to share with us a small presentation of the book and its content.

We also took the liberty of attaching the link below to access the ebook: https://www.belizehistorysjc.com/uploads/3/4/7/0/3470758/maximo_layout_2020_2.pdf

"Maximo" Book Launch

After a year of waiting due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Northern Maya Associations were able to launch the book Maximo, the Last Alcalde of San Jose Yalbac. The book which was co-authored by Mrs. Carmen Carillo and Mr. Delmer Tzib, edited by Ms. Melissa Castellanos, illustrated by Mr. Carlos Quiroz, and designed by Mr. Yasser Musa. It tells a tale of community resilience, identity, and bravery. It is the story of a man who stood against the odds to represent and care for his people in Yalbac and in San Jose Nuevo Palmar.

The warmth of San Jose and the coziness of the Perez family provided for a launch like no other, the Maximo way. In a very emotional and serious ceremony, we listened and discussed the life of Maximo Perez and assessed his legacy. The result of such discussions led us to think of Maximo not only as a man but as a figure of identity, as a representation of resistance, and an instrumental story for Belize.

"I must mention the deep respect and admiration I have for my Maya brothers and sisters in Palmar and the northern region.

We are here and we are alive! Masewal Maya! Viva Maximo. " - Delmer Tzib

Note : Maya Masewal is another term us Maya Yucatec of Belize use as identification.

The Legend of Maximo, Back to His Roots

About a year ago, we told you about an electronic book launched by the Image Factory Art Foundation. It's called "Maximo: the Last Alcalde of San Jose Yalbac".

The stylishly designed volume tells the origin story of San Jose Palmar Village in the Orange Walk District, and how Maximo Perez and his people resisted the colonial rulers of the day. This electronic book brought a story shared through oral tradition to life, using cutting-edge graphic design.

Last Saturday, the personalities behind the e-book traveled to San Jose Palmar Village to officially launch it. With video provided by the Image Factory, here's how that launching event looked:

The book is available for free as a downloadable eBOOK on the Image Factory Art Foundation Facebook page. A limited printed edition is now available for sale at $20 each, from the Image Factory in Belize City.
