The first vehicle to cross the new Roaring Creek Bridge this morning, as it was opened for the first time to traffic, was driven by Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Works, Errol Gentle. The bridge is built 12 feet above the old one, and has two full lanes for vehicular traffic, as well as two pedestrian paths. Higher, wider and stronger, this massive new structure is a landmark that puts an exclamation point on twelve years of infrastructure transformation by this UDP Dean Barrow Administration. It was constructed by M&M Engineering of Belize, with supervision by IMC International based in the United Kingdom.

===================

This morning, a temporary opening for the Roaring Creek Bridge was held. Cayo Correspondent Fem Cruz has the story.

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: The CEO from the Ministry of Works, Errol Gentle, this morning along with engineers from M&M Engineering held a temporary soft opening of the new Roaring Creek Bridge. CEO Gentle explained the purpose.

Errol Gentle, CEO, Ministry of Works: "Yes we're here this morning and what we are doing is we are opening the bridge for vehicular traffic. As you know every single day we have that bottleneck, we have traffic blocking up on the side of the old bridge so what we are doing today the bridge is basically completed, the structure itself is completed we are just doing the final cosmetics but what I am doing now is just to open the bridge for vehicular traffic. This is not any inauguration or anything because we have an inauguration planned for sometime down the road where we should be having a grand official opening of this magnificent structure so what we're doing this morning is just to try and relieve the congestion and so the bridge will be open to vehicular traffic as of this morning."

Tell us how this well help the first pavement of chippings.

Errol Gentle, CEO, Ministry of Works: "Well yes the traffic running over it would help it to set in place because we've already they did the first layer. As you know it's chip and seal so the first layer has been placed but now we need the traffic to start running over it to get it set. One of the reasons why we are opening the bridge because I mentioned the congestion but also for safety reasons right ? We have all the bottleneck we don't want no type of crashes, no collision and so opening the new bridge we need to take the very same precaution. You go over bridge you have to go slow, you have to go less than 25 mph and in fact we have the police stationed next door and I will be asking the police to keep an eye out for people trying to speed and put other driver's and pedestrian's lives in danger."
