Stranded islanders allowed to travel back home with proof of residence
On Monday, May 4th, water taxi services from the mainland to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye are expected to resume for essential travel only. These runs cover only essential worker travel, the purchase of essential needs, attending medical appointments, emergencies and the return of care providers. The latest Statutory Instrument NO. 65 governing the State of Emergency, however, does not offer any provisions for people to return to their respective communities of origin. Regardless, personnel from The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Sunday, April 3rd that islanders stuck on the mainland can now travel back home, if they can provide evidence that they reside on the island.

'A second sense of grief': coronavirus hits cultural travel boom for black Americans
Losses threaten Caribbean and African nations where travel had become a growing industry, spurred by cultural and heritage links. Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon sat on a private island off the coast of Belize for her next travel story, she found it odd that more and more passengers wore masks at the airport. When trips were suddenly cancelled, the Jet Set Sarah blog owner accepted a new reality for travel had been created by coronavirus. “It was a shock, the old normal is completely gone and will never return,” she said, doubtful about being “back on a plane before October”.

Some Caribbean Nations See A Silver Lining In The Coronavirus Fight
Several Caribbean nations are showing positive signs that they are flattening the curve of the dreaded new coronavirus, a silver lining for a region that has seen its tourism dependent economy crushed by the pandemic. The number of new coronavirus cases has now been zero in over 20 islands for several days now as two have reported all cases have fully recovered from the virus. Additionally, three Caribbean countries now rank in the top 10 list of nations prepared to lift physical distancing measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic globally according to the first ever response tracker tool created by the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government on the preparedness. The three countries ranking high globally from the Caribbean region are Trinidad and Tobago, Belize and Barbados.

Why Modern Fishing Is a Catch-and-Release Game
I am a statue gliding over a bleached flat, stiffened by salt and wind and sun. In the water ahead of me, a silver knife cuts the surface and in a moment I am casting from the skiff, the fly streaking through the sharp Belize sky, the blisters on my hands forgotten. Sixty feet of line and months of preparation hang in the air. I square my shoulders and flex my knees. And I wait. Good fishing stories ideally end with a fish. But the stories have changed in recent years, the romance of fishing evolving from brutish grappling matches on the open ocean (picture the conquered marlin, mounted in mid-leap on the wall, a reminder of the strength of the contest) to something faster, more precise, yet altogether more considered.

With No Tourists, Australian Scuba Tours Are Planting Coral Instead
In Australia, snorkeling and scuba diving tours of the Great Barrier Reef have been suspended until further notice. While many touring companies have simply closed their doors and sent everyone home, there are a few that are using its resources and man-power to help repair the reefs in their area. The family-owned tour company, Passions of Paradise, has volunteered to assist scientists by planting coral on the Great Barrier Reef. They have donated their state-of-the-art catamaran, Passions III, to take four crew members and one scientist to Hastings Reef for the Coral Nurture Program.
