Community volunteers secure drifting buoy marker at Tuffy Channel
A buoy serving as a navigational marker at Tuffy Channel on the Belize Barrier Reef in front of Ambergris Caye has been secured to its designated location by local volunteers. Having drifted away due to high waves and strong currents, the buoy’s relocation is believed to have caused a Mexican Naval vessel to run aground on the reef on Wednesday, May 6th, as it transited through the channel.

Completion of fire-fighting activities
With the recent heavy downpours over most of the country, the many fires that were creating unbearably smokey conditions in the western and central municipalities of the country are now extinguished. This brings to an end the weeks of firefighting effort by the Forest Department, the Fire Department, the Town and City Councils, and many other partner organizations. The Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development, through valuable financial support from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), the Belize Electricity Company Limited (BECOL), and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), was able to invest significantly in the use of aerial firefighting to help to control the unprecedented wildfires that raged through the Cayo District.

This is our data up until today. The 37 new samples processed today are not linked to any confirmed case and are not as a result of any mapping exercise, but rather as a result of random samples from across the country. All were negative. Our numbers can only remain like this if we continue to practice consistent prevention measures. We are also monitoring very closely the cases in neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala as they are both to show increasing numbers. Stay safe all.

The Garifuna Collective featured on ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’ album
Disclaimer: I am not a birder. Never have been, probably never will be. But I appreciate birds and birdsong. All this to say, one thing I can totally get behind is birdsong that comes through my speakers. At an acceptable hour – say 11am – when I’ve had my first pot of coffee? Yes. I think that works. And for those, who like me, can’t see themselves doing the birding thing, there’s this amazing non-profit, crowd-funded album inspired by birdsong. “Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean” features Belize’s very own Garifuna Collective, with their song “Black Catbird”!
