Boat Crash At Caye

There was a boating accident yesterday evening at the San Pedro International Marine Terminal. A 25-foot vessel crashed into the wooden wharf of the terminal.

At around 5:45 p.m., 35-year-old Horace Bladen, a tour guide from Belize City, was the captain of this vessel, which is registered to Searious Adventure Tours. His passengers onboard included 54-year-old Sandra McLean, the owner of the tour company; 24-year-old Roy Bradley; Celestino Campos, and Jose Lopez.

The vessel was approaching the terminal when the boat captain lost control of it. The boat then slammed into the wharf, and all the passengers were flung overboard. Among the injured in the accident were Horace Bladen, who received abrasions to the right side of the face, and a swollen left forearm, and Roy Bradley, who received cut wounds to the top of his head, and abrasions below the right eye. The other persons on board escaped unhurt.

The boat was damaged by the impact, and so was the water terminal's wharf. The value of the damage done to the terminal is not yet known.

We understand that police have recorded statements, and a urine sample was obtained from Bladen for analysis. He was immediately detained for investigation after the accident.

Boat accident injures two; San Pedro Police investigation underway

An investigation by the Belize Port Authority on the island is currently underway to find out the cause of a boat accident on the lagoon side of San Pedro Town on Sunday, May 17th. According to an official police report, initial investigation revealed that at 5:45PM, Boat Captain/Tour Guide 35-year-old Horace Bladen was operating the said boat on the lagoon side. The boat was heading south to north when Bladen lost control of the boat and collided into the wooden wharf of the International Water Taxi Terminal. The impact caused damages to some of the boards of the dock and some of the passengers were thrown out of the vessel. Bladen received an abrasion to the right side of his face and ended with a swollen left forearm. Another passenger in the boat, Roy Bradley, 24, received a cut wound to the top of his head and an abrasion below the right eye.

Bradley was taken to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, and Bladen was reportedly detained by police. The other persons traveling in the vessel were Sandra Leslie, Celestino Campos, and Jose Lopez. According to a witness, there were about four boats heading in the same direction, and speed is believed to have played a role. When the boat crashed, the witness said that Leslie, Campos, and Lopez were thrown overboard; according to the report, they received no injuries.

Crashed Vessel Was Racing

On Monday's newscast, we told you about a boating accident in San Pedro in which a tour vessel crashed into the wooden Wharf belonging to San Pedro International Marine Terminal. Well, preliminary investigations are indicating at this time, the captain was in some kind of boat race when he lost control of the vessel.

As we told you, at around 5:45 p.m. on last Sunday evening, 35-year-old Horace Bladen, a Tour Guide from Belize City, was the captain of the boat, named "Jackson Nicholas", which is registered to Searious Adventure Tours. He had 4 passengers on board, including the owner of the tour company.

Investigators from the Port Authority were informed that Bladen's vessel was one of 4 boats that departed an area on the leeward side of Ambergris Caye at the same time. It appears that Bladen and another boat captain began racing toward their respective docks since they are in the same general area.

While arriving near to the International Marine Terminal, Bladen looked behind him to see if the rival boat captain was catching up to him. He reportedly looked away from the direction his vessel was heading for a short duration of time, but the damage was already done.

When he turned his attention back to steering the vessel, he realized that there was not enough time to avoid colliding into the wharf - as shown on this security video. He then braced for impact, and it is estimated that the boat was traveling at around 30 miles per hour. Due to the speed, the vessel slammed into the terminal's wooden wharf. The force of the impact sent the boat flying completely over the dock, and all of the passengers were thrown overboard. Bladen suffered minor injures, and one of his passengers, Roy Bradley, received cut wounds to the top of his head, which required stitches, and abrasions below his right eye.

The Belize Port Authority is still in the process of gathering all the necessary information about the accident before they decide what charges, if any, will be laid against the captain.
