If You Want to Protest Against the Opening of the PGIA...

Last week I went into the streets to find out how the average man and woman felt about the August 15th re-opening of the PGIA. The majority wasn't at all comfortable with it. Those apprehensions are what a group of activists is hoping to capitalise on with a protest being held next week Wednesday.

It's called the "No Open Di PGIA Protest" - and activist Ya-Ya Marin Coleman is one of the lead organizers. She told us that it's about getting the voices of regular people heard above the influence of monied interests:

Again, the protest is being held on July 15th from 11 am to 1 pm - and anyone who supports it is encouraged to come out with their placards.

Belize wants Tourism but not Tourists
It is understandable that it is difficult finding a balance between the health of people and the economic health of the nation.
It is unfortunate that the lady in the video feels that people with substantial investment in tourism, i.e.: hotels, resorts and airlines, are only interested in their own profits. Belize decided long ago to develop tourism as a way to improve the economic health of the country, which by the way benefits all Belizeans whether directly involved in the tourism industry or indirectly.
She appears unaware of how the money from tourism supports many of the government services that all Belizeans benefit from. It is too bad she doesn't have a crystal ball showing what her life would be like in Belize without the people, that she criticizes, investing in tourism and the tax dollars, foreign currency, etc that it provides.
Again, it is a delicate balance tryin to weigh public health and economic health.
Public health can be helped by taking precautions against diseases. Just like is being done. Unfortunately, economic health of Belize cannot survive without tourism. That means tourists coming to Belize.
