The current spike in cases has brought about another wave of fear, and once again, the online bullies are out by the dozen. There is a difference, however, in the San Pedro residents, especially the patients. At press time, three people have openly declared their COVID-positive status, informing their friends and acquaintances on Facebook.

The first to do so was Abner Diaz, also known as the very popular DJ Smallz. On Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:20AM, he announced via Facebook. “I am finally here to tell you all that YES I am COVID-19 Positive…I just got my results so that’s why I didn’t post anything before. So, to you all out there just please wear your mask wash your hands and keep safe.” The San Pedro Sun spoke to Diaz, who shared that he is doing well. He is isolated and will continue to be so for the next 14 days, while hydrating. He did say that prior to his diagnosis, he experienced flu-like symptoms, including cough, headache, fever, loss of appetite, and even had some issues with his eyes. Diaz says he cannot pinpoint where he could have contracted the virus, as his job requires him to be actively social. However, he is confident that he is on the way to recovery, and he thanks his family and friends for their support.

Around 1PM on that same day, Ever Zelaya, bar manager, also announced that he had tested positive. “I am sharing this in public to help others. I have been feeling very well, almost like I don’t have it so don’t panic. A very important thing I want to say, stop sharing information about others saying they are infected, because bullying…it’s not [good]…You are not a superwoman or superman, you never know when you can get it. This virus doesn’t discriminate…rich, poor, etc. Unfortunately, the island of San Pedro has been affected too much – as well as the whole country – so let’s support each other. This is for all my Belizean people: we can do this. Wear your damn mask, social distance, and always wash your hands and you will be okay!”

Marisa Murphy-Guerrero, an active member of the community, mother of three, and CrossFit coach & athlete also announced her diagnosis on Facebook. Unfortunately for her, the symptoms have been a lot harder on her. “Prior to being symptomatic I was feeling well. Normal. There was nothing to indicate that COVID symptoms were about to hit me…I coached morning classes at the gym on Monday and was in good health. I took my temperature before each class, as I did for all members who attended the gym. I sanitized my hands regularly and sanitized the equipment between each class. My business partner and I had already made a decision that we would make that our last day and close the gym ‘til we knew what was happening on our island.

Island DJ Opens Up About Positive COVID Test

That is a sobering message for sure, and a San Pedro DJ has gotten it loud and clear. He is Abner Diaz, known on the island as DJ Smallz. He posted his COVID 19 positive status on facebook today - and we spoke to him about it via phone:

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"First of all Smallz how do you feel?"

Voice of: Abner Diaz "DJ Smallz" - tested positive for Covid19
"I am feeling good. The worst already happened the first few days, after that it got smoother and I feel better now."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"How did the symptoms feel when you had it? It felt like a regular flu, what did it feel like?"

Voice of: Abner Diaz "DJ Smallz"
"It felt like a regular flu, I just had fever, headache, minor stuff like that. Later on I had appetite loss and that was when they told me that they traced me from the mapping."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"You know how you contracted it?"

Voice of: Abner Diaz "DJ Smallz"
"Well I don't know from whom, they just called me and tell me this person gives your name, they said they had contact with you, so we're just tracking you down, please go for a test and that is how I went through my test and I couldn't tell if I actually got it or not. I just know I got it, I don't know how."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Do you know how many people you've contacted have gone through a test?"

Voice of: Abner Diaz "DJ Smallz"
"I know the people I've contacted and so far they haven't call me for any mapping as yet."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"What prompted you to say hey there is no reason for shame, people have to know and I'll inform the world via facebook?"

Voice of: Abner Diaz "DJ Smallz"
"I had think it a few times before I posted it, but then I was like why, I shouldn't. It's a virus and yes its bad, its been killing a few people out there, but for posted it out there I feel like it helps me and the people out there to be aware. I posted it up today because my results came in a little late. It took like 5 days for them to give me my results and its due to too many people who went and took the test and then I posted up for the next reason that probably that I don't know maybe had contacted me, because I mingle with a lot of people, so due to my DJ I see a lot of positive comments and I'll like to thank everyone that have been posting positive stuff."

Infected Pharmacist Speaks About Symptoms

This weekend, Carlos Novelo, a pharmacist in the town, provided some insight into what it is actually like to manage the painful symptoms that come with COVID-19.

Several days ago, he tested positive with the virus, and to raise awareness about the virus, he decided to publicize a series of testimonials on his Facebook page. Novelo urged his social media followers that his decision to do this mainly to help in the education of the general public. He is hoping to help convince everyone to follow the Health Ministry's advice of regular hand-washing, properly wearing face masks, and practicing social distancing.

Here are a few excerpts from his testimonial, in which he called for compassion on behalf of other Belizeans who are currently getting the bad news that they contracted COVID-19:

Carlos Novelo - COVID-19 Patient
"I commend those who have already come out as being positive. It is very commendable, and they are very brave souls. I really admire that, and it's one of the reasons that inspired me to do this video."

"Unfortunately, I have been tested positive for COVID-19. As you know, I work on the frontlines. It's not easy. The virus does not care who you are, what you do, where you are. The virus does not discriminate."

"I really ask for empathy for people who have been afflicted with this disease. I think that is the best thing we could do, and whatever support that we can show, whether it is just a 'Hey, are you okay? We're here for you.' Honestly, that really helps a lot. It's very encouraging. And I'm also glad that none of us are really suffering symptoms. It can be managed at home, or it can be managed where we're isolated."

"I just had a mini-attack of shortness of breath. But thankfully, I was helped. I have support from my family. A family member helped me with vaporizing actually. So, it really does help. For those who are having difficulty breathing. It helps, and I can tell you right now, hot water. You cut lime. Put some lime in there. Cut some onion, put it in there as well, and Vicks. Whether you like it or not, Vicks really does help - apologies about that. Vick does help. And then, you just breathe in the vapor. It helps you breathe better."

"Day 2, not a good day. Just take care of yourself. Take care of your family. Take it seriously. Take this thing seriously. I know that some people think that because you're young, and you're strong. I get cussed out for telling people to use face masks."

Novelo has promised to provide regular updates on what his road to recovery looks like.
