Pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for a Covid-19 test that does not require a laboratory.
Abbott aims to have 50 million of those test kits in stores by early October. They will be sold for US$5.00.
The test - BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card - is the size of a credit card and requires no other equipment. According to Abbott Industries, this is a nose test, but one that is less invasive than what exists today.
The technology behind the test is similar to the one in pregnancy tests. The results of the test are known after 15 minutes.97 to 98 percent accurate
According to Abbott, the tests are between 97 and 98 percent accurate in people who were tested in the first seven days after showing symptoms.
Abbott has also developed an app that allows people who have tested negative to demonstrate when required. The app then serves as a temporary digital health passport. The app renews the result each time the person undergoes the test.
BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card could be used to test people at large events, schools and factories.
The test will be a game changer. Millions of people will be able to test themselves at home and no longer have to wait days for a result.https://abbott.mediaroom.com/2020-0...g-Production-to-50-Million-Tests-a-Month
