Marine Conditions:
The Caribbean Sea
A tropical wave is moving over the central Caribbean, while
another one is approaching the Lesser Antilles. Presently, scattered moderate convection is noted overt eh south-
central Caribbean south of 12N between 78W-82W. Scatterometer data
depicts light to moderate trade winds across most of the basin
except between 60W-70W, where moderate to fresh winds prevail.
Moderate to fresh trade winds over the central Caribbean will
increase to fresh to strong speeds by mid-week. Moderate winds
will continue elsewhere, except for gentle winds over the
northwestern Caribbean.
A broad area of low pressure is expected to form over the western Caribbean Sea in a few days. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for some development thereafter, and a tropical depression could form late this week or this weekend while the system moves slowly west-northwestward over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
Satellite images show clouds, showers and thunderstorms associated with a westward moving tropical wave over the northeastern Caribbean and over adjacent waters of the Atlantic. This tropical wave is forecast to move westward and remain disorganized over the next few days. This system will reach the northwestern Caribbean on Thursday or Friday.
Meanwhile, a frontal boundary is expected to reach and then stall from near the Yucatan Peninsula to the southern coast of Cuba. This front is currently producing numerous thunderstorms over the Gulf of Mexico. As this front and the westward-moving tropical wave interact with each other, an area of low pressure will develop over the northwestern Caribbean Sea from Thursday night into Friday. There is a growing chance that a tropical depression or tropical storm might form in this area Friday night or during the upcoming weekend. Regardless of tropical development, heavy rainfall leading to the chance for flash flooding will develop by the end of the week across parts of Central America, southeastern Mexico, Cuba, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. All residents and interests in this area should closely monitor the progress of this system.
