PUP At 70
Last week Tuesday was the People's United Party's 70th anniversary. To celebrate that milestone, on Sunday the party's executive members held a virtual National Party Council Meeting, which was carried live on their Facebook page.
The meeting had that same unusual format that the party has been utilizing for their virtual events, since the start of the pandemic. It was a mashup between a morning talk show and a news bulletin, but the supporters who tuned in live were able to find out what their leaders have been up to, now that Prime Minister has officially called the election.
Here are a few excerpts from that 2-hour broadcast in which from the chairman and the Leader of the Opposition as they discussed their party's 70th birthday:
Henry Charles Usher - Chairman, PUP
"Seventy years ago, the torch of the peaceful constructive Belizean revolution was lit, the birth of the People's United Party on September 29th, 1950. And today, 7 decades later, the blue flame is burning brightly. It burns for freedom. It burns for democracy."
Hon. John Briceno - Leader of the Opposition
"This week marks the 70th anniversary of our party. Today, we celebrate by giving thanks for all those true blue supporters who helped us to reach this incredible milestone. We are the oldest and most accomplished political institution in our nation."
"We will forever be unmatched in Belize because we are the party of self-government, adult suffrage, and we are the party of independence."
