UNITED STATES DROPS LEVEL 4 ‘DO NOT TRAVEL’ WARNING FOR BELIZE

The United States government has dropped its level 4 ‘Do Not Travel' warning for Belize to a level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel'. The downgrade of the advisory couldn't have come at a better time as Belize has officially reopened for tourism as of October 1st and is one of the countries allowing American tourists to visit.

Back on August 6th, the U.S. removed its global level 4 travel warning but slapped Belize with a level 4 ‘do not travel' advisory due to COVID-19. As of October 5th, the United States downgraded the Belize travel advisory to a level 3 ‘reconsider travel' due to COVID-19. When the original level 4 advisory was first issued at the beginning of August, Belize was seeing its first cases of COVID-19. Although the numbers were relatively low, the U.S. State Department still issued the level 4.

With the number of COVID-19 cases staying relatively stable with no large increases over the last 2 months, the U.S. has dropped the level 4 for Belize. The United States travel warning says “Reconsider travel to Belize due to COVID-19. Exercise increased caution in Belize due to crime.

The U.S. warns of crime in Belize including “sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder – are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas.”Tourists are encouraged to “exercise caution while traveling to the south side of Belize City. Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted,” the advisory states.

Belize received upwards of 350,000 American tourists a year prior to the pandemic and is looking to revive its tourism economy. Beaches, resorts, restaurants and tourist services have all resumed operations as of October 1st. American tourists are encouraged to limit their interactions with locals and stay within resort areas to help protect the population and reduce the spread of COVID-19.
