Hurricane Delta makes landfall at 530 am as category 2 (175 km / h) in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo.
Crown Weather:
Delta made landfall on the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula around 6:30 am EDT/5:30 am CDT this morning as an 110 mph hurricane. After undergoing rapid intensification yesterday morning into the early afternoon hours, some easterly mid-level shear impacted the hurricane for several hours leading to the hurricane weakening almost as quickly as it strengthened (from a 145 mph hurricane to a 110-115 mph hurricane in just a few hours).
Satellite imagery today indicates that Delta is producing some very deep thunderstorm activity. Even with that, the hurricane isn't as strong as it looks on satellite imagery with reconnaissance aircraft indicating winds of 105 mph and a central barometric pressure of approximately 974 millibars.
Delta is expected to move across the northern Yucatan Peninsula over the next few hours and should emerge in the southern Gulf of Mexico this afternoon.
