Police have reportedly intercepted a large stash of heroin - not a common drug in Belize. And one that if released into the streets could cause havoc.

The discovery was made yesterday when Belmopan Special Branch searched a pickup at a Capital City gas station on the Hummingbird Highway. Four men were inside - three of them from Valley Community in Stann Creek and one from Maskall Village, Belize District. They were reportedly heading from the direction of Dangriga to Belmopan.

When police searched their Ford Ranger with Stann Creek plates, they found a black knapsack in the pan of the truck. The bag contained four plastic packets with a total of almost 8 pounds of suspected heroin. This is a high-value bust because heroin has about twice the street value of cocaine, with a bust of this size having a US street value estimated in the hundreds of thousands of US dollars.

All four men are detained pending charges for drug trafficking. They include one Guatemalan who lives in Valley Community.
