Capacities Within the Belize Crime Observatory are Strengthened for Inter-Agency Collaboration
The Ministry of National Security today received 15 Dell Notebooks and accessories procured under the USAID-funded “Evidence-based Information Management for Citizen Security in Central America and the Dominican Republic” Project (also known as the InfoSegura Project). The project supports interventions and policies that aim to strengthen crime and justice data platforms in Belize and at the regional level, including working to support the formulation of evidenced-based policies and decisions. The project is being implemented in Belize by the United Nations Development Programme with the Ministry of National Security as the Implementing Partner.
The fifteen computers are being handed over to the Ministry of National Security for the Belize Crime Observatory (BCO), which serves as the national repository of crime data and information. The procurement of the systems, valued at US thirty-two thousand five hundred and three dollars (US $32,503) will enhance and strengthen the capacity of partners, allowing them to systematize inter-agency sharing and facilitate the analysis of data for dissemination. The Belize Police Department, the National Forensic Science Service and the Belize Central Prison in the Ministry of National Security; the Epidemiology Unit in the Ministry of Health; and the National Women’s Commission are some of the key partners who collaborate with the Belize Crime Observatory in its work to address gender-based violence and gender inequality.
The United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of National Security thank all partners for their continued contributions towards A Cohesive, Safe, and Just Caribbean and for the progress made thus far in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through their collaborative efforts to achieving peace, justice and stronger institutions, and promoting gender equality, as a means of reducing gender-based violence in Belize, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
