Scattered moderate showers are noted from 15N to 19N between 71W and 83W, scattered moderate to strong showers are evident from 09N to 12N between 76W and 82W, and numerous moderate to strong convection is from 15N to 19N between 86W and 89W. There are no organized features in the Atlantic basin at this time.

We continue to track several tropical waves moving westward across the Atlantic basin, but no further development of any of these waves is anticipated.

A non-tropical area of low pressure could form over the western Atlantic early next week. This system would only have a short period of time to develop subtropical characteristics before it accelerates northeastward and merges with a cold front by the middle of next week.

The best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain...let it rain. Unfortunately, there wil be lots more of it over the weekend as a Tropical Wave approaches our area. Be prepared and alert for more localized flooding.

It’s Going to be a Rainy Weekend!

It’s going to be a wet weekend – that’s the news coming out of the national met service.  The forecast is for a weekend with mostly rain and some thunderstorms. Forecaster on duty Francisca Wellington says that we may the rains slow down a bit Sunday but don’t go making any outdoor plans because it’s not likely that the rains will stop all together.

“There are three different situations at the same time. We have what is called the international convergence zone which is further north over us and that is producing a lot of moisture over us. Secondly, we have a stationary front to the north of us and that has an associated what we call a high pressure rate that brings a north-north easterly flow. This system is very large at the moment and so it is bringing moisture from way over the Atlantic and so that is another point of moisture. And then we also have a tropical wave approaching us and so that is three systems. So, for the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours, we will see continuing showery activities; thunderstorms and periods of rain. I am not seeing an ease until Sunday. I am not saying that it is going to stop. I am just going to say that it will ease up.”

“Currently, we have a small craft warning in effect because we have high waves seven to ten feet and higher because of this same north easterly flow that I am telling you about. We also have flood warning for the Belize district and we have flood warning for the entire country especially low lying areas.”

It looks as if this weather is just picking on Belize, these last two days. This is not from the storm, but simply the weather conditions, that allowed that storm to form, large areas if ITCZ swellups, resulting in a lot of vertical air movement, which causes rain, some very heavy rain. I have measured about 60mm ( 2½" ) over the last 24 hours, and 224mm ( 9" ) over the last 5 days, which is more than the 200mm of rain from Hurricane Eta.

Looks as if today will be another cloud blanket day, low cloud and high cloud at the same time, so probably a lot of on/off light rain and patches of heavy rain, presently around north coastal areas, and San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

Present Condition: Cloudy throughout the country, and very heavy rain also. Raining like crazy in San Pedro, got 5 inches last night and more today. A tropical wave is influencing the weather across the country.

24hr Forecast: Cloudy to overcast with some showers, periods of rain and isolated thunderstorms continuing this afternon and tonight with a slight decrease tomorrow morning.

*A flood warning is in effect for low-lying and flood prone areas of the country due to heavy rainfall. Residents in the Belize River Valley and downstream should remain vigilant as the rising flood waters move downstream towards the coast. *A small craft warning remains in effect for coastal waters of the country. Operators of small crafts should remain in safe harbour.

Outlook: A few showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue mostly along coastal and offshore areas Sunday afternoon through to midday on Monday.

NEMO ADVISORY #8: FLOOD WARNING FOR BELIZE
SATURDAY, 21 NOVEMBER, 2020, 6:00 PM

The National Hydrological Service of Belize and NEMO hereby inform the general public that major flooding is affecting most of the country due to Hurricane Iota.

A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT Significant areas of the Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo and Belize districts are experiencing severe flooding. The Belize and Sibun rivers are spilling their banks due to the fast down stream flow associated with secondary flooding. There is little or no debris blocking the flow path which was cleared out by the first flood so the waters are rising much faster. This is compounded by the fact the rivers were already at flood state. Residents living along or near to these rivers are called upon to take the NEMO advisories seriously. Move to safety to save live and protect property.

DO NOT STAY IN YOUR HOME tonight if you know it is likely to flood during the course of the night. MOVE TO SAFETY, SAVE YOUR FAMILY, LIFE COMES FIRST! If you can shelter in your home place food and valuable items out of the reach of floodwaters. Ensure you have an emergency kit, secure your documents and valuables. Farmers are reminded to continue to secure their livestock. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. If your home is likely to flood turn off the main power supply. Beware of the movement of wild animals and snakes in your area.

Water contamination is a major threat to health. The public is advised by BWS to store water. The treatment of water for human consumption in flooded areas is compulsory before it can be used for drinking purposes. DO NOT DRINK DISCOLOURED WATER OR WATER WITH A SMELL.

As advised by public health one (1) tablespoon of bleach can purify 5 gallons of water but allow it to settle for thirty minutes before using. DO NOT: remain in areas where latrines are overflowing due to the floodwaters, play or drive in floodwaters and cross flooded creeks and rivers. SIX INCHES OF FLOOD WATERS CAN SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET. DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATERS, IT IS DANGEROUS. Motorists are asked to drive with extreme caution when traversing the highways and secondary roads. Drivers are reminded to put on their seat belt and hazard light when driving through rain and to report dangerous areas.

CEMO activated today to review the flood situation in Belama and decided that shelters will not be opened tonight. The Mayor did a site visit where he concurred with the NEMO Coordinator that the biggest concern at this time is access for most of the affected residents in Belama. Divine Mercy church provided assistance to two persons with coordination from the Belize Red Cross and NEMO. NEMO is activated and responding with full support from the government, its international partners, national committees and uniform services.
