Belize Water Services (BWS) informs in the San Ignacio/ Santa Elena and Benque Viejo areas of the Cayo District of water supply restrictions caused by the ongoing flood conditions. The floods have inundated some of our water sources causing damages to some of our intake mains and electrical equipment, which cannot be repaired until the floods recede to allow access. The loss of water sources at these locations has limited the amount of water available for supply; therefore customers have been experiencing low water pressure and outages, especially to those at the higher elevations.

Additionally, some customers in these areas have been reporting higher than normal chlorine levels in their water supply. BWS chlorinates the water to meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to ensure water quality and safety. The high drawdown of water reservoirs during the day means that the chlorine has far less contact time than usual. Our technical team is therefore making the necessary adjustments to ensure the chlorine residuals is at an acceptable level.
