LIVE: FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Launch of Official Roster

=================

FFB Presents National Team

On March 25th, one week from now, Belize's National Football Team, the Jaguars, will playing its first match in Round 1 of the Qualifiers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The first match for Team Belize is an away game, which will take place next Thursday, against Haiti. The second game against Turks and Caicos would have been a home game scheduled for March 30th. But, as viewers are aware, it is still illegal to play contact sports in Belize due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, Belize had to make a difficult, deadline decision to play that game in the Dominican Republic instead. It's a disappointment for the local football community, but the National Team and the FFB have done the best they could to prepare for these matches.

You'll remember how they had to lobby the Government to allow the team to practice in camp in complete isolation from the rest of the population. Today, the FFB hosted a press conference to introduce the players who will represent the country in these World Cup Qualifier matches. It was done virtually, and 7News tuned in.

The FFB has told 7News that they will be providing detailed information for the Belizean fans about how they can tune into these matches to support the Jaguars.

Belize Jaguars ready for the World Cup Qualifiers

In case you missed it, the Football Federation of Belize presented its official roster for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The team was selected after a series of cuts – based on fitness and other training preparation. As news Five’s Andrea Polanco found out, the players have had to maintain a lot of self discipline during the pandemic, but are now roaring to go.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

The Football Federation of Belize has put together the roster for the National A Team that will represent Belize in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.  The twenty-three players are seasoned names and young talent from home and abroad that make up the national A Team:

Maurice Jones, Retired Footballer

“Goal-keeper Woodrow West; Eithon Wagner; Issac Castillo; Ian Gaynair; Norman Anderson; Collin Westby; Jose Urbina; Asrel Sutherland; Everal Trapp; Andres Makin Jr; Jordy Polanco; Ean Lewis; Jesse August; Krisean Lopez; Nahjib Guerra; Desmond Wade; Deshawon Nembhard;  Angelo Cappelo; Mike Atkinson; Nana Mensah; Carlos Bernardez; Deon McCaulay; Johny El Zein.”

It’s been a tough year for the footballers – they have been unable to play the sport due to the COVID-19 regulations. In order to avoid default for the upcoming qualifiers, they had to prepare by training in a bubble at the FFB grounds. According to the FFB, the team members had trained long and hard even before they joined the training camp last month:

Dale Pelayo, Head Coach, Belize National Team

“We started mid-October because of the quarantine and unable to play contact sport. We had to go online to implement a special training program individually for our players and from Mid-October leading up to the middle of January we had our players work on a specific endurance, strength and speed.”

Marlon Kuylen, Executive Member, FFB

“Of all national team preparation so far, this has been the most challenging. Apart from not playing for an entire year, the players had to motivate themselves to keep in tip top shape for the day they would be called to take the physical test. Once chosen the mental preparation for living an entire month away from home before travelling an additional ten days with the ambitions of representing our country.”

The team is a mix of veteran footballers and young players who say they are excited for the qualifiers:

Deon McCaualy, Member, Belize Jaguars

“We have all sacrificed so much and the most prestigious trophy in football is on the line once again for us, Belize. The sacrifices that we have made are not easy especially in the time that we are living in but we love this country and we love the game so much that we are ready to do whatever it takes to bring success to our family, friends, fans and country and ourselves.”

Angelo Capello, Member, Belize Jaguars

“I have enjoyed every moment. I love playing football and love being here and it is always an honor to represent my country regardless of where I have been or where I am coming from. On that note, I can’t wait to put that shirt on and step out on to the pitch and show Belize what I and the team will do.”

The Belize Jaguars heads Haiti on Sunday and they will have their first match against that island and then they travel to the Dominican Republic where they will play their home game against the Turks and Caicos. President Sergio Chuc wants Belize to rally behind the Jaguars:

Sergio Chuc, President, FFB

“Belize, I ask you from the bottom of my heart to give your team, give the Jaguars your hundred percent support. They are facing, I believe, the most difficult opponents in our group next week and once we pass this hurdle which we are sure we could pass, it will be flying colors for the rest of the games.”

Andrea Polanco reporting for News Five.

The team will be accompanied by Head Coach Dale Pelayo Sr., Assistant Coach  Marvin Ottley; Goal Keeper Coach Stanley Reneau; along with several other supporting staff including a manager,  physical trainer and therapist and a doctor.  Michael Salazar and Tony Rocha who play in the major league soccer in the U.S. are unable to join the team due to quarantine regulations time period.

Haiti 2, Belize 0

Here's a video of the match:
https://fb.watch/4trpjKHQsv/

All this week, we've been telling you about the inauspicious start to the Jaguars' trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Well, what didn't start well, also didn't end well when the team got punished on the football pitch this afternoon.

The game Kicked-off at 3 p.m at the Sylvio Cator Stadium in Port-Au-Prince.

The Jaguars challenged the Haitian National team valiantly, but by the 50-minute mark, Haiti scored their goal. Belize's goalkeeper made a save at 71 minutes into the match, but Haiti wouldn't be denied. And, by the 80th-minute, Haiti scored their second goal of the game.

When the final whistle was blown, the score was 2 goals for Haiti, and Zero for Belize. Team Belize has a short time to recover from this first loss. That's because they will start to make preparations to travel to the Dominican Republic. Their second qualifier match against Turks and Caicos is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Belize falls 2-0 against Haiti in first World Cup qualifying game

The Haitian team proved to be the favorite one and dominated the game from the beginning. The Belize team-the Jaguars struggled to overcome their opponent, but all efforts were futile. Throughout the first half of the game, they primarily played defense. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the score remained 0-0. During the second half, Haiti continued to dominate the game. Belize did not change its strategy, and on minute 51, Ricardo Ade of Haiti found the opportunity to score with a header. He ran into the box behind the defenders and headed down to the right corner, defeating the Jaguar’s Woodrow West.

As the game continued, Belize made minimal approaches to the Haitian side. The second goal came at minute 81 with a corner kick executed by Steven Séance for Haiti. The ball bounced off Séance, Belize’s Deon McCaulay tried to clear the area, but the play ended in Haiti’s second goal. The Jaguars tried hard in the last minutes but could not find a way to come back. At the end of the game, Haiti took the victory with the final 2-0 score.

Jaguars Recovering From Haiti Loss

Last Friday, we told you how the Belize National Football Team, the Jaguars, traveled from Haiti to the Dominican Republic for their next World Cup Qualifier match.

After losing their first match against Haiti last Thursday, the team left for the DR to play their second match against Turks and Caicos. Some of the players arrived last Friday, and the rest arrived on Saturday along with the coaching staff. The trip went without incident and they're all safe in the D-R.

That's where the Football Federation of Belize arranged a virtual press conference on Saturday to allow the Belizean media to ask what led to the defeat against Haiti.

Here's an excerpt of that press conference in which the Head Coach explained the game from his perspective:

Dale Pelayo Sr. - Head Coach, Belize National Team
"Going into this game with Haiti, we knew that it would have been difficult. We know what we were going up against. It's not an easy game. Haiti is ranked the best team in the Caribbean, and so, we knew exactly what we were going up against. We wanted the team to focus more on a defensive game, in which we were very disciplined defensively. We allowed 2 set pieces to score; that's football, but offensively, it took away from our game. We asked Deon to focus more a little bit defensively, to help in the middle of the field with Jordy. Offensively, We wanted Angelo to play wide, which he did, but our game plan was to remain focused defensively for the 15-30 minutes of the game, which we did. Offensively, as I said, it took away from our game, but we wanted our offense to come through Jordy Polanco, through the midfield. It didn't happen. We had some bursts in the game where we had some advances offensively. But, that's football, but we need to focus now on our next game, which is our home game. We need to go out, and we need to be more offensive. That's the focus of the team. We need to focus more on getting the ball upfront to give us some more opportunity at goal."

"Not being able to play football for almost a year, we were at a disadvantage. You look right around in Central America. They found a way to have the sport start. We were unable to do so. Our league is not playing. Most of our are locals. When you look at the Haitian team, almost 90% of their team is from France, from Europe. They're actively playing football, so we were at a big disadvantage. It was just the last month that the Federation was able to receive the permission from the Government to train in a bubble. That's not enough at this level, at the World Cup Qualifiers. It's not enough, but despite all of that what we did in the game Thursday was significant for me to show that we have the ability. We have the players. It's just a matter of us giving our players the best opportunity to perform at the highest level."

T & C Ready For Belize After Blow-out From Nicaragua

And it's unto the next one for team Belize - and that means Turks and Caicos.

This afternoon, the FFB and CONCACAF organized a press conference between the Belize media and the T&C national team.

On Saturday, they also lost their first match of the World Cup Qualifiers against Nicaragua with an embarrassing final score of 7 goals to zero.

We got an opportunity to briefly discuss tomorrow's match against Belize with the head coach and the captain of the Turks and Caicos Islands team. Here's what they had to say about the importance of tomorrow's win for both sides:

Omar Edwards - Head Coach, Turks and Caicos Team
"We have a game against Belize tomorrow. Unfortunately, both teams lost their first game. So, both teams are going to go for maximum points, so to speak. We understand that Belize is a very good football team. They're very organized, and we're going to prepare ourselves as best as possible. Both have teams have conceded goals. Both teams failed to score in their first game. It's an indication that we need to improve as we go forward, especially for the Turks and Caicos Islands National Team. Belize is a very good team, and we're anticipating a tough game against them tomorrow."

"We're in an unprecedented time, a very challenging time, which forced us not to prepare the way we would have wanted to prepare. Back home in the Turks and Caicos Islands, we had to stop training due to the restrictions on COVID. Very unfortunate for us, 3 of our starting players are unavailable of the restrictions placed on traveling to and from the country. Nonetheless, I believe that the players that we have here are giving it their very best, and I definitely appreciate the effort and the commitment from that."

Jaguars Ready For T & C

Later in the evening, the FFB organized a pre-game press conference with the Jaguars, and they told us that for tomorrow's match, Team Belize will be looking to play a more offensive match against Turks and Caicos.

The coach said that the team wants to play this home game as though they were in Belize tomorrow. Here are those comments:

Dale Pelayo Sr. - Head Coach, Belize National Team
"I am very optimistic. I feel good. My team is well focused, and we are prepared for this game tomorrow. This is our final training, our official training before the match, and it's just for the guys to become more comfortable on the pitch that we're gonna play tomorrow, and for us to go out and execute. I am very optimistic about this game, and I think back home, we're gonna show all our fans what it is that we've come out here to do, and that is to play football and represent the nation as best as possible."

Deon McCaulay - Co-Captain, Belize National team
"I think everybody is pumped up for this. We went over the last game, and we saw our mistakes, and I think that everybody will learn from the last game, and we're ready to execute the plan that the coach has for the team. We just have to stay focused until tomorrow during the game and play our 90 minutes. I think that all the players are ready. Everybody is just waiting for game time."

"I think that the last game was a really tough game, and this game, hopefully, we can be a lot more offensive, get some goals early on, and try to put this team away."

The game will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and we'll have the highlights in our Tuesday newscast.
