Born in the midst of the current pandemic, the Belize Community Gardening project aims to directly benefit frontline tourism personnel such as tour guides, tour operators, taxi drivers, hair braiders and artisans who lost their jobs due to the decline in International tourist arrivals. As a responsible corporate citizen, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) last year provided some seed capital to kick off the project. Today, BTB visited the site located at mile 19 on the George Price Highway and was pleased to see that significant progress has been made. The project includes a 17x60 covered structure for vegetable production and multiple fish ponds for tilapia farming. David Almendarez, Project Director, says they are getting ready for inauguration in three weeks’ time.
