Forty-six women contested this year's municipal elections, 23 of whom now hold a seat in political office. While all 46 could not have won, the Special Envoy, Rossana Briceno, has extended congratulations to all.

A release from her office noted that the historic participation of women and their subsequent triumph to such esteemed positions of leadership is a milestone in the journey of gender equality in Belize.

In addition, the release highlighted that for the first time, Belize's capital city has a female mayor, Sharon Palacio. The Special Envoy also congratulated the first female area representative for Corozal Bay, Elvia Vega Samos.

A late release from the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Affairs applauded all 24 elected women, and said that they recognize the need for more women representation in office.

The Caribbean Women in Leadership in Belize also commended the women.
