Have you gotten your "snappah fi yuh wappah?" Or maybe you prefer a "jack fi the back." Whatever you choose for your Good Friday dinner, we know that fish markets are expecting a crowd as Belizeans take part in this Easter tradition.

But, like tradition, the fish vendors have also raised their prices in anticipation of that crowd. Courtney Menzies went out to find out the cost of the much sought-after snapper and has this story.

Easter weekend is only a day away and while ham was the star of the dinner table only a few months ago, Belizeans have traded the pig for a snapper - or grunt or jack.

And, just like every year, the fish vendors have taken advantage of the Good Friday fish tradition to make a few extra bucks. This year, our team of fish finders visited three markets to find out the price of your favorite fish.

Our first stop was Conch Shell Bay.

Courtney Menzies:
"A fish like this right here in your hand, how much you think…"

Vendor
"$120."

Courtney Menzies:
"$120?"

Vendor
"Yup."

Courtney Menzies:
"And what kind of fish this?"

Vendor
"Red snapper."

Courtney Menzies:
"And so you notice if price went up?"

Vendor
"Yes."

Courtney Menzies:
"So what's the most you'd probably get a fish out here for, per pound?"

Vendor
"$10."

Courtney Menzies:
"And is this usually the price around Easter?"

Vendor
"Yes."

Courtney Menzies:
"So what's usually the price outside of the season?"

Vendor
"$8."

Vendor
"I'm a fish vendor, I clean."

Courtney Menzies:
"So you're cleaning for other people?"

Vendor
"Yes."

Courtney Menzies:
"Do you know how much they're selling it for?"

Vendor
"No, sweetie, you have to go to the boat and find out because they have all price."

Courtney Menzies:
"You notice if price gone up?"

Vendor
"Yeah, the most you'll pay is about $10 a pound."

Another vendor out in the Yaborough area told us that they were forced to hike up their prices because of the steady increase in fuel prices.

Courtney Menzies:
"How much are you selling fish out here for?"

Vendor
"$10, $10 right now."

Courtney Menzies:
"And what kind of fish do you have?"

Vendor
"Snapper, grunt, parrot fish."

Courtney Menzies:
"Which kind of fish are people coming out to buy more?"

Vendor
"Snapper, snapper people want."

Courtney Menzies:
"That's what they usually buy for Easter?"

Vendor
"We have to sell for these price because gas just gone up again last night."

Courtney Menzies:
"So that's why the price have to go up?"

Vendor
"Again. But if it's all big ones you want, it's $12 a pound, but if you want mix up, it's $10."

A solitary vendor outside the Novelo's Bus Terminal said that he has also had to raise his prices, not due to fuel, but another reason - his plight is the ban placed on gillnets which has made it harder for him to catch fish.

Vendor
"No fish is there, you see that hard breeze? The boat wouldn't be able to be out there in the hard breeze like that and you can't catch what you can't find because water muddy."

Courtney Menzies:
"So now this affects your business for Easter?"

Vendor
"It affects everyone business, not just my one."

Courtney Menzies:
"So now people aren't getting as muh fish for Easter."

Vendor
"They're not getting as much because the poor fish they're getting is high."

Courtney Menzies:
"Is this forcing you the raise the prices of your fish?"

Vendor
"Because there is a little bit so you have to make back your money, your gas, pay your work man."

Courtney Menzies:
"So what kind of fish can you catch now that you're not using the net?"

Vendor
"Only snapper you could catch but if snapper is not biting then you done know you won't catch anything."

But if you want a good deal on fish, maybe you should check out the vendors on Marine Parade whose prices are the lowest we came across today.

Vendor
"We got the barrow fi $6 a pound and we got snapper for $6 and $9 and $5."

Courtney Menzies:
"That's pretty to cheap compared to other places that's selling it for 10."

Vendor
"Yes man and then you don't even have to buy plastic bag out here. Barracks is the spot, everybody know."

Courtney Menzies:
"So how come you guys don't jack up your prices like other people?"

Vendor
"Because we have love. And it's the same local people come right back to us back to back."

Courtney Menzies:
"And are you guys seeing the same crowds you usually round this time?"

Vendor
"Usually, but we just are out early right now."

Courtney Menzies:
"More people will come this afternoon?"

Vendor
"Yeah about 2:30 or 3 you will see more people crowd here and line up. It's like lines like they're going to get their pantry, but they're buying."
