John Lloyd Stephens travelled through British Honduras in 1839. He gives a vivid description of the town as he walked from one end to the next in his book "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan. The good thing is that the part about British Honduras is all in the first chapter.
It is an excellent book to read. It is extremely helpful to understand the sentiments of the times (1830's) of what life was like not only in Belize but in Central America. It certainty sheds a light on how and why the British were able to finally negotiate a portion of the land now called Belize for their personal use.
