Jorge David Awe
by Joe Awe
"Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. To seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!”
― Dale Wasserman, Man of La Mancha
This is a tribute to a son, a brother, an uncle, a nephew, a husband, a father, a grandfather, father-in-law, a friend; a man:
Jorge David Awe.
The man so many loved as Pop's, a forever name given to him by one of his friends and 'sons', Remo Dan.
Pop's has left us as he stepped into the ether where he is now electric!. It's a process of our humanity to be born, to grow, to live and to die - then to go into the light. His path was marked. He has complied.
I am not qualified to eulogize Dabo. I was just his admirer; his student, his other son; a man-child. Not qualified!
So, this is a memorial. Nothing sad here. Tragic of losing the man, but overjoyed in being so lucky of being around him - raw, uncut, unique, unrivaled, unforgiving, and full of so much light and kindness and love - there is no other person as the man that Dabo was, on this planet.
He was well-read. He had this interesting characteristic of pushing me to the edge of my idea's oblivion...then he would wait those few seconds, where I, full with frustration, will be relieved by a sly giggle - "stay strong talegas! Resist! I am just throwing you against a wall as life does! I am preparing you for the licks! Your frustration will keep you from living! Live Jose, live!!"
And that he did! He lived! And we enjoyed his living with him.
To end, one of the most curious things I will miss of the Pop's on earth, is when I am in the middle of a chef move in the kitchen, night or day, I would call him and beg his counsel: "Pop's I am in the middle of bla bla bla and I don't know what I am missing here with this recipe..." Pop's, in his beautiful madness would ask the most messed up question (to me!)" "Talegas, your phone noh have internet? You noh know about google?" Then his resounding laugh... The guy was a fantastic chef! Like Jesus the man, he would feed the masses!
Jai calls you the BEST FISHERMAN EVER!!!
I may not always have google Pop's, but I will forever have you in my spirit.
My sincere condolences to his sisters, Ada, Chata, Betty, Alice, and Gladys; his brothers, Jaime and Pope Awe (I will have to call you guys maybe for the recipes now!); all his nieces and nephews, grandchildren; all the rusties, great friends who loved him as a brother, a mentor and as a father-figure. Sending you love.
To David Awe Ali, Tessa C.A., Lisa, Bange: you have my eternal love. Whenever you are in need of some loving madness, call me. I am here.
I'm gonna miss you Pops. Now, I am crying like a "simple talegas".
Touch lives. Change the world.
