The Caribbean Sea

An upper level low over southeast Cuba is supporting scattered moderate convection over the Windward Passage, between northern Haiti and eastern Cuba. A few showers are also noted between central Panama and southeast Nicaragua, mainly due to trade wind convergence. Ship observations and an earlier scatterometer satellite pass indicated fresh to strong trade winds off the coast of central Colombia, where seas are estimated to be 5 to 7 ft. Gentle to moderate trade winds are noted elsewhere, with 4 to 6 ft seas.

For the forecast, winds will pulse to fresh to strong over the south central Caribbean the next several nights. Otherwise, a high pressure ridge north of the area will support moderate to fresh tradewinds across much of the Caribbean through Mon.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

There are currently no organized tropical features in the Atlantic basin at this time. The combination of dry air and moderate to strong wind shear will likely prevent tropical development from occurring through at least this weekend and likely into early next week.

Long-range guidance suggests an easing of the wind shear across the Gulf of Mexico and western Caribbean later next weekend into early the following week, along with an increase in tropical moisture. This should allow thunderstorm activity to increase, especially in the western Caribbean Sea, which in turn may cause an area of low pressure to form. This may be the next opportunity for tropical development in the basin.

The GFS model continues to see cyclone development of interest to the Caribbean next few days on the Central American slope from the Caribbean coast of Panama to the Yucatn Peninsula, like Cuba. The European ensemble is trying to trace possible tracks to some cyclone system that could be born in that area. Nothing concrete, just forecast so far, but pending.

On Ambergris Caye this morning we have a wind from the East at 13 mph creating calm sea conditions around our barrier reef. Today's expected high temperature is set 89f. Last nights sprinkle of rain didn't register on my rain gauge but the flora probably appreciated it.

The easterly Caribbean winds have some cloud in them and that is developing more over land. there is some high level winds from the NNW which are causing some areas of rain, mainly over the sea off PG, and a few minor spots of rain along the coast.

Looks as if today will be similar to yesterday, mainly sunny, with significant clouds and a small chance of rain.

Present Condition: Mostly clear skies. Sunny and windy in San Pedro. A relatively moist easterly airflow supports passing showers over some parts of the country.

24hr Forecast: Sunny with a few cloudy spells during the daytime and partly cloudy tonight. There will be brief showers occurring around the country.

Outlook: For Friday afternoon through to midday on Saturday is for a similar trend in weather conditions.
