The Caribbean Sea

A tropical wave is along 75W. An upper level trough passes through Hispaniola and extends SW to Costa Rica. Isolated moderate convection covers the area that is from Jamaica northward between the Windward Passage and the western tip of Cuba. Scattered moderate showers are seen on the SE side of the upper-trough extending from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands SW to the Venezuela/Colombia border.

Fresh to strong trades are in the south-central Caribbean, with fresh trades elsewhere over the central Caribbean as well as the Gulf of Honduras. Moderate to fresh winds are in the E Caribbean. Moderate E to SE winds are in the NW Caribbean, north of 19N. Seas are 8-9 ft in the south-central Caribbean, 5-7 ft over the remainder of the central Caribbean, and 3-5 ft elsewhere.

Fresh to strong winds will pulse over the central Caribbean, Windward Passage and Gulf of Honduras through tonight. High pressure ridging north of the area will continue supporting moderate to fresh tradewinds elsewhere through Tue night. Winds will diminish to gentle to moderate by midweek as the high pressure weakens. An enhancement of showers and thunderstorms is expected in the east-central Caribbean through Tue due to the combination of an upper-level trough and tropical waves traversing the region. The enhanced showers and storms will migrate to the central and SW Caribbean mid to late week.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

There remains no organized tropical features in the Atlantic Basin at this time, and none are expected to develop through at least the middle of the week. These quieter conditions may not last much longer.

A broad area of circulation, sometimes called a gyre, is expected to develop near Central America by late in the week. This gyre will help produce an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity across the western Caribbean Sea, Central America and even in the eastern Pacific Ocean during this time. Wind shear is expected to be rather low over the western Caribbean Sea late this week and weekend, which may allow the increased thunderstorm activity to organize and form an area of low pressure at the surface. With environmental conditions expected to remain favorable through the weekend and into early next week, this low pressure area may slowly develop into a tropical depression or storm in the northwestern Caribbean Sea or southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

The tropics are showing signs of coming to life. The National Hurricane Center is highlighting an area in the Caribbean for potential tropical development later this week. Models keep showing signs of a broad area of low pressure known as the Central American Gyre developing around Central America sometime in the June 11-15th time frame. This broad area of low pressure can lead to persistent thunderstorm activity and tropical development.

Since northing has not formed yet, there is no way of telling where it will go, or who it will impact if it does form. Some models show something moving into the Gulf, some show something staying around Mexico. Something to keep a watch on for now.

The National Hurricane Center has officially marked an area where a low-pressure system will emerge with likely cyclone formation. Residents of Central America, the Western Caribbean, Mexico and the United States must monitor.

The easterly Caribbean winds have already produced a lot of cloud over land, partly helped by some high level from the NNE, with the result there have been some rain showers all down the coastal regions from Corozal, right to Toledo.

Looks as if some rain showers will be continuing in some places from time to time, a lot of cloud, some sunshine.

Present Condition: Mostly clear throughout the county, a very few clouds in the south. Totally sunny and windy in San Pedro. A relatively moist easterly airflow remains, but generally fair weather prevails over the area. Operators of small crafts are advised to exercise caution for occasionally gusty winds and locally rough seas, especially during nighttime and early morning hours. Heat alert: Residents, especially those inland, are advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activity as much as possible.

24hr Forecast: Sunny with a few cloudy spells during the daytime and partly cloudy tonight. Showers will be isolated, and there is the chance of isolated thunderstorms developing over the south.

Outlook: For Tuesday afternoon through to midday on Wednesday is for isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms.
