The Caribbean Sea

Fresh to strong trades continue in the S central Caribbean, with moderate to fresh trades elsewhere, except gentle E-SE winds in the SW Caribbean south of 11N. Seas of 4 to 6 ft prevail across the basin, except locally 7 ft in the S central Caribbean, and 2 to 4 ft in the SW Caribbean south of 11N.

For the forecast, a ridge of high pressure north of the basin combined with lower pressure over Central America and Colombia will support pulsing fresh to strong trades over the S central Caribbean and Gulf of Honduras through the upcoming weekend. Moderate to fresh trades will prevail elsewhere, except light to gentle south of 11N. A tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean will cross the central Caribbean mid-week, then the western Caribbean at the end of the week.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

Tropical Storm Bill has formed from Tropical Depression Two on Monday night. Elsewhere, there remains no other organized tropical features across the Atlantic basin, but the satellite image does show an area of increased convection across the southern Gulf of Mexico, northern Central America and southern Mexico associated with a disturbance that will be monitored through this week. There are also several tropical waves located at 32 west, 41 west, 58 west and 82 west. Another tropical wave is emerging off the western coast of Africa. This wave already appears rather robust on current satellite imagery and will need to be monitored carefully over the next few days as it tracks westward across the far eastern Atlantic. All of these waves are moving west between 10-15 mph.

We continue to watch a broad area of rotation across southern Mexico, known as a gyre, that is producing clusters of rain and thunderstorms extending from near the southern coast of Mexico in the eastern Pacific into the southern Gulf of Mexico. As thunderstorms continue to develop across this region through the course of this week, surface pressures are expected to lower gradually in the southern Gulf of Mexico, which can eventually lead to a more well-defined disturbance across the region. With conditions expected to be marginally conducive for tropical development across the southern Gulf, there is the concern that this disturbance can produce a more centralized and concentrated area of low pressure, slowly developing into a tropical depression or storm later this week. While water temperatures are warm enough to support a tropical system, as any potential system moves farther to the north late this week, it is expected to encounter stronger wind shear which may work to limit development. At this time, most guidance indicates that this wind shear will inhibit the system from rapidly strengthening, and it is still possible that the wind shear could inhibit significant tropical development altogether. Regardless of tropical development, this feature can bring heavy rain and the threat for flooding across southern Mexico through the middle of this week.

Nothing to be concerned about currently. This tropical wave just off the coast of West Africa is being monitored for some development during the next few days but hostile atmospheric conditions should inhibit any chance of tropical cyclone formation while it's still very far away from the Lesser Antiles.

Strange weather this morning. A lot of very heavy high level cloud around, one branch streaming fast out at sea, the other down over Guatamala. There is also mid-level cloud moving up from the south and only a little easterly Caribbean winds. A recipe for all sorts of rain, and yet the rain radar says no rain anywhere near Belize and that over the Yucatan earlier is drying up.

The indications are for a warm, high humidity, over cast day, but no indication of any rain at present.
