Repair the Road North: Beginning soon!

In just over a week, serious repair work will begin on the road north of San Pedro Town - from the Secret Beach junction to La Beliza at about 9 miles north. Spearheaded by San Pedro Mayor Wally Nunez with the help of long-time Ambergris Caye resident Richard Gross, the co-owner of Casa Rana Belize, this project is such a great example of how the community, a grassroots movement, and the town can work, hand in hand, to get things done. Big things. Especially impressive in this incredibly hard economic time. Road repair is just something that the local government just couldn't afford to do at this time.

The team worked to raise over $50,000bzd from private donors - resort and home/condo owners - as well as from the local government. Donations of materials, equipment, and personnel have been made by Fidel Ancona, an owner of the 50-acre quarry north as well as Ray Flint, who manages much of the heavy equipment for the quarry.

This will be all be used to tackle a job that is essential - anyone who drives the road north knows that it is in terrible shape. We need to enable rapid medical/fire/police response if needed, to reduce the cost of vehicle repairs, and make the road driveable for residents and for our recovering tourism industry. AND to get this done before the rainy season really begins and the roads, already in bad shape, get even worse.

North Ambergris Caye residents join forces to rehabilitate northern road

On Friday, July 30th, a community grassroots project came to fruition with the beginning of the much-needed rehabilitation of a section of the road in Northern Ambergris Caye. The project saw over 20 business and property owners from the northern part of the island joining forces. With the support of local authorities and partners, more than $200,000 in contributions, materials, equipment, and personnel were collected to repair the deplorable road. The idea to take care of the road was born about six weeks ago when some upset business and property owners residing in the area concluded that 'enough is enough' and something needed to be done to fix the road's condition. The goal to figure a way on how to renovate the road was set in motion and resident Richard Gross, co-owner of Casa Rana, with support from Mayor Gualberto 'Wally' Nuez, local businessmen Fidel Ancona, Ray Flint, Mike Coleman Construction, Chris Medrano, and 20+ property owners from northern Ambergris Caye put all hands-on deck and started working.

The works started in the Matachica resort area, where two large culverts were installed. The work will continue until the section of the road heading north from the Secret Beach turnoff to La Beliza Resort is adequately repaired. According to Gross, this is a fantastic example of how almost any problem can be solved when the community comes together to fix it.

Rehabilitation of north Ambergris Caye road complete thanks to community effort

The rehabilitation of a section of the road in northern Ambergris Caye has been completed. The road, which was in deplorable condition, is now considered the finest on the island. The project initially started with the contributions of over 20 business and property owners. That number doubled as community members joined forces and, along with the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and other partners, collected resources to renovate the road. More than $200,000 in contributions, materials, and equipment were collected to make the repairs. Labour for the project came from business partners Fidel Ancona, Ray Flint, Mike Coleman Construction, Chris Medrano, and the SPTC. The 40+ local business owners, resorts, and property owners from northern Ambergris Caye saw the need to come together and give back to the community by fixing the vital artery.

The works began at the Matachica Resort area heading north from the Secret Beach turnoff to La Beliza Resort. One of the residents spearheading the project, Richard Gross, reiterated this was possible because the community came together to solve a problem. He encouraged others on the island and across Belize to work together as a team to overcome obstacles and make their communities a better place to live for all. For years, this road seemed abandoned by the local authorities. During the rainy season, it was almost impossible to traverse. Following the much-needed renovation, the road is in much better condition, making the transportation of services and goods to this area of Ambergris Caye, home to Belizeans and hoteliers, more efficient.

Community project aids North Ambergris Caye road with repairs after rains

As part of the initial plan, a portion of the rehabilitated road in Northern Ambergris Caye, underwent maintenance over the weekend to keep it in good condition. The northern road was renovated via a community grassroots project in July of this year. It involved the effort of over 20 business and property owners from that part of the island. The repairs on Sunday, October 10th, and Monday, October 11th are to take care of any damages caused by the recent heavy rains.

The task to upkeep the road was spearheaded by resident Richard Gross and was joined by community members, along with the San Pedro Town Council and other local partners. The necessary resources were collected and in mid-August, the works on the road were completed. The works began at the Matachica Resort area north from the Secret Beach turnoff to La Beliza Resort. The area recently refurbished over these past two days is the section from the properties of Sundiver to Portofino and the section by Las Terrazas Resort. "I am keeping my commitment of maintaining the North Road in good condition throughout the year," said Gross. He reiterated that this was possible because the community came together to solve a problem. He encouraged others on the island and across Belize to work together as a team to overcome obstacles.
