Marine Conditions:

The Caribbean Sea

Scatterometer data from 0430 UTC depicted fresh to strong trade winds across the south-central Caribbean, as well as over the Gulf of Honduras and into the northern approaches of the Windward Passage, where concurrent altimeter data showed wave heights near 8 ft. Maximum seas are estimated to be 9 ft in the south-central Caribbean, mainly off the coast of Colombia, and to 8 ft over the eastern Caribbean where fresh tradewinds follow the tropical wave moving across the basin. Moderate E to SE winds and 3 to 5 ft seas are noted over the northwest Caribbean. In addition to the convection mentioned in the Tropical Wave section, scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is ongoing off eastern Panama.

For the forecast, the tropical wave reaching from Haiti to northeast Colombia will move quickly across the central Caribbean through today, and then move west of the basin into mid week. High pressure centered north of the region will build in the wake of the tropical wave, supporting strong tradewinds and building seas into Wed, including strong nocturnal NE winds across the Windward Passage Tue night into Wed. Winds and seas will diminish through Fri.

The Mayan trough, combined with wet air, will favor some scattered rainfall and storms in the peninsula. Tropical wave arriving in Central America and very active tropical wave over the Central Caribbean is approaching.

The easterly Caribbean winds have significant clouds in it, and the overnight high level cloud has been clashing, causing many isolated rain showers. These are now reducing. The high level mainly originated over Honduras and Nicaragua yesterday and is swinging up north and over Belize over night.

Looks as if today will continue to be cloudy, mainly high level cloud, but signi9ficant low level cloud and the chance of rain showers anywhere, some sunshine later.

If you were noticing the hazy skies yesterday - it's Saharan Dust!
It makes for hazy hazy days and AMAZING sunsets.

Saharan dust is filling the Gulf of Mexico and much of the tropical Atlantic as it arrived Sunday July 11. That second cloud should reach us on Friday.

The first cloud will add enough particulate matter to the atmosphere to push the air quality index into the "moderate" category. Most people won't notice a difference, but if you are unusually sensitive to these clouds, your allergies could flare.
