Marine Conditions:

The Caribbean Sea

An active tropical wave is over the NW Caribbean generating showers and thunderstorms. Please refer to the Tropical Waves section above for details. Elsewhere, an upper trough reaches from across Hispaniola to eastern Panama. Dry, subsident northerly flow aloft is suppressing showers and thunderstorms across much fo the central. A few showers are following the tradewind flow across the Leeward and Windward Islands, but no significant convection is noted over the eastern Caribbean at this time.

Fresh to strong trade winds are noted across the central Caribbean with 8 to 11 ft seas. Strong NE winds are noted in the Windward Passage as well with 5 to 7 ft seas. Fresh E winds and 5 to 6 ft seas are evident over the Gulf of Honduras following the tropical wave. Moderate E winds and 5 to 7 ft seas are noted elsewhere.

For the forecast, the tropical wave is moving across the Gulf of Honduras and will be west of the basin later today. High pressure north of the region following in the wake of the tropical wave is supporting strong tradewinds and rough seas over the central Caribbean. Fresh to strong NE to E winds are expected in the Gulf of Honduras through tonight. Winds and seas will diminish Thu and Fri as the high pressure weakens, although areas of fresh to strong winds will continue to pulse in the Gulf of Venezuela and near the coast of NE Colombia. Looking ahead, tradewinds and related seas will increase over the south- central Caribbean and slightly around the Leeward Islands Sat into Sun as another tropical wave reaches the eastern Caribbean.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

There are no organized systems in the Atlantic basin at this time. While there are a few tropical waves crossing the basin, tropical development is not anticipated through at least the upcoming weekend.

A non-tropical low pressure system has developed a few hundred miles northeast of Bermuda. While this low pressure will drift over some warmer waters over the next couple of days, tropical development is not expected to occur.

Later this week and weekend, a broad upper-air low pressure system will stall over the southwestern Atlantic. While this area will be monitored for signs of tropical or subtropical development, computer guidance continues to suggest development will not occur. Still, these are the kinds of systems that can very quickly go from nothing to an organized tropical or subtropical feature in just a short time.

Tropical wave no. 11 is in the area. Our Mayan trough, in conjunction with the arrival of this very active tropical wave in the Caribbean, will favor strong storms in the area.

A huge area of rain passed over Belize during the night, that west Caribbean cloud mass of yesterday, moved over Belize causing many swellups in the general ITCZ activity area. Much of that cloud and activity has now moved further west, with just a few smaller more isolated showers still to come over land.

Looks as if today will be mainly cloudy, particularly in the morning, rain showers continuing on and off, but getting less by this afternoon.
