[Linked Image]Police officer 37-year-old Arilee Young was the victim of a double murder in Belize City on Saturday, August 21st. The second victim was 17-year-old Sherana Cardenas, Young's teenage daughter. Reports indicate that Young's partner, a security guard identified as 26-year-old Robert Glenford Perriott, shot and killed them, turning the firearm on himself. The double murder/suicide took place in a residence in the Kings Park area of the city. Information suggests that Perriott arrived from work late on Friday night with his job-issued weapon. Perriott and Young and her daughter allegedly got into an altercation. He reportedly shot both of them and killed himself.

Originally from San Ignacio Town, Cayo, Police Officer Young was no stranger to San Pedro Town. After graduating from the Belize Police Academy in 2013, her first placement was at the San Pedro Police Formation. During her service with the island police force, she worked as a relief/patrol police officer. After some years on the island, Young was transferred to Belize City, where she was attached to Precinct 1. Many islanders remembered Young as a hard-working officer and someone they respected. They were shocked to learn that her life and that of her young daughter were cut short. In San Pedro and across the country, flags at police stations will flag at half-mast in honor of Young.

San Pedro Police remember PC Arilee Young

The San Pedro Police Formation held a memorial display in honor of the late Police Constable Arilee Young on Wednesday, August 25th. A condolence ledger for persons wishing to pay their respects and sign was available. Young started her policing career in San Pedro Town, where from 2013, she served several years on the island. She was recently transferred to Belize City and assigned to Precinct 1.

In San Pedro, Young was very well known and loved. Her daughter attended San Pedro High School and was preparing to further her education. Those who visited and signed the ledger expressed their shock and shared their condolences. They also said that domestic violence is like a silent cancer. Nobody knows that it is there until something terrible takes place. Those close to Young say they never knew of any domestic issues between her and Perriott. They advise those suffering from domestic abuse to seek help before it is too late.

A Stripped-Down Farewell for PC Arilee Young

A funeral service for thirty-seven-year-old Arilee Young, the police officer who was shot and killed by her boyfriend last Friday, will be held on August twenty-seventh at the Santa Elena Cemetery. The memorial mass for the slain cop will fall within the existing COVID regulations which means that the pageantry that traditionally accompanies the interment will be limited to a slow march and a twenty-one gun salute only. Notwithstanding the size of PC Young's family, the Belize Police Department is scaling down the farewell ceremony. According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, saying goodbye to one of their own amid the COVID-19 pandemic will be a subdued sendoff.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"We are the police and we have to, as much as we can, abide by the regulations. If not then we are going to be criticized and rightfully so. You would know that when it comes to an official funeral there are certain elements that must be present and so we will be having just the firing party, that will be the team that gives the twenty-one gun salute. We'll have the pallbearers, those are the persons who carry the casket, a few wreath bearers and the band to do a slight slow march to the burial site. We're not going to have that pomp and circumstance that we normally have associated with police officers' funerals. We're going to cut it down significantly to ensure that new abide by the COVID-19 regulations."
