Will be in AC for the 1st time in September. We were thinking of renting bikes but a friend of mine asked what prevents them from being stolen when you are in eating or, more often than not, drinking. Can anyone shed light on this.

I think the answer to your question is, "not much". We stayed at Caribbean Villas that provided free bikes for DAY use only. We were told by CV staff that the reason for that rule was the large number of bikes that get stolen after dark.

Go to Joe's bike rentals on Middle Street. His rates are good and he provides locks for all his rented bikes.

Phone him on 226 4371 when you get to the island.

Whewn I was there late February heard a sad but kinda funny story.

Biker pedaled up in front of grocery south of town & began to lock his beat up rental bike. Med student pedaled up beside him with his $450 designer bike and said - "No Reason to lock it..this is Belize." Both went into store and came out together 5 minutes later...guess which bike was gone.

Thanks to all of you. I will leave my designer bike (as if I had one) at home. I won't ride after dark (drinking and riding after dark might be too much for me anyway) and I will rent from Joe's. Maybe I'll just leave the kids outside with the bikes while we are inside drinking. They have to be good for something (just kidding). Thanks again to all of you.

Gay & David - I will remember that. I thought bikes might be fun in case the 4 of us wanted to go separate directions. I keep forgetting the place isn't that big so we can always walk.

I have heard that what they want are the tires. They throw the frames into the water. Also when locals have to buy new bicycles they muddy them up to look old. Bicycles are great fun for transportation.

When we were there for two weeks plus, we just bought bikes (and locks -always locked 'em up). We got great new bikes to ride, and it costed out fine vs. daily rental. We could have sold them back to the store after two weeks and cut the cost even more, but we gave them to some people that had been very nice to us.

Worked out great.

Do some arithmetic and see whether it can work for you.
