General Situation:
Ambergris Caye: Conditions this morning by Elbert just before or after this post!
Belize NMS: Present Condition: Mostly cloudy in the south this morning, less so in the north. Mostly clear in San Pedro. Generally fair weather prevails; changes come tonight.
Advisories: None.
24-hour forecast: Sunny with cloudy spells today and cloudy skies tonight. A few showers and isolated thunderstorms will affect the southern districts today and most areas tonight. Elsewhere today, only isolated showers will develop.

Outlook: A few showers and thunderstoms will continue to affect the country on Friday, increasing during Friday night.
Sargassum Forecast from September 7 to September 15: There is a low to medium chance of new sargassum mats landing on local beaches during the next few days. San Pedro has a medium probability and a moderate impact.
Tropical Weather Outlook: At 3:00am Hurricane Larry was centered near Lat 30.9N and Long 61.1W or about 240miles ESE of Bermuda. Tropical Storm Mindy was located near Lat 30.5N and Long 84.0W or about 30 miles ENE of Tallahassee, Florida. Click for more of the tropical weather outlook...

Marine Conditions:

The Caribbean Sea

A weak north-south pressure gradient across the Caribbean is forcing only fresh E trades over the S central Caribbean and moderate or weaker trades elsewhere. Seas of 5-6 ft due to swell from Hurricane Larry continue in the Anegada Passage and the Mona Passage. Seas are also 5-6 ft over the central Caribbean with 3-4 ft elsewhere. Scattered moderate convection is noted from 15N- 19N between 79W-85W.

For the forecast, swells generated by Hurricane Larry will gradually subside across Atlantic waters of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola today. As Larry moves farther north, the Atlantic ridge will build westward N of the Caribbean Sea bringing an increase in the trade wind flow tonight into the weekend. Locally strong winds are possible offshore Colombia, mainly during the nights.

The northern portion of a tropical wave over the western Caribbean Sea is forecast to emerge over the southern Bay of Campeche on Saturday. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive to support some gradual development of the system before it moves into mainland Mexico early next week.

...LARGE LARRY CONTINUES MOVING NORTHWESTWARD WITH NO CHANGE IN STRENGTH ...DANGEROUS SWELLS TO AFFECT MUCH OF THE WESTERN ATLANTIC BEACHES THIS WEEK...

At 5 a.m. AST, the center of Hurricane Larry was located over the central Atlantic Ocean about 240 miles (385km) east-southeast of Bermuda. Larry is moving toward the north-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and a turn toward the north-northwest and north with an increase in forward speed is forecast today, with a faster northeastward motion expected by Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Larry should pass east of Bermuda today, and move near or over southeastern Newfoundland Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts - a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Larry remains very large, with Hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 220 miles (350 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 969 mb (28.62 inches). Gradual weakening is forecast to occur during the next couple of days.

...HEAVY RAINFALL FROM MINDY SPREADING INLAND OVER SOUTHEASTERN
GEORGIA AND COASTAL SOUTH CAROLINA...

At 5 a.m. EDT, the center of Tropical Depression Mindy was located inland about 80 miles (125 km) south-southeast of Valdosta, Georgia. The depression is moving toward the northeast near 20 mph (31 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue today. A slower east-northeastward motion is forecast tonight through Saturday. On the forecast track, the center of Mindy is expected to move across southeastern Georgia this morning, and over the western Atlantic by late this morning or early this afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. The minimum central pressure estimated from surface observations is 1004 mb (29.65 inches). Little change in strength is forecast through tonight. Gradual weakening is expected on Friday, and Mindy is forecast to become a remnant low by Saturday.

On Ambergris Caye this morning we have a few scattered rain showers and a 14 mph wind from the East. The sea around our barrier reef is calm. Today's expected high temperature is set at 85.

There has been small areas of rain around, almost any part of Belize and there is still some areas of little rain. That cloud activity that cause our heavy rains, last week end, did, as I suggested, form into a Tropical storm TS MINDY and went across north Florida.

We still have both low and high level clouds over Belize, still causing outbreaks of rain, and this may continue for much of the day, on and off.

Looks like rain for tomorrow's start of the Holiday Weekend.

Present Condition: Mostly cloudy throughout the country, including San Pedro. Our airflow is becoming moist and unstable as a tropical wave approaches the country. A small craft caution will go into effect tonight and tomorrow for gusty winds and locally rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms. Flood watch: There is the possibility for flooding to occur over low-lying and flood prone areas as heavy rainfall is expected over the next 24 to 48 hours.

24hr Forecast: Sunny skies with cloudy spells this afternoon with generally isolated showers and thunderstorms except for a few more over northern areas. Tonight and tomorrow skies will be mostly cloudy along with outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms developing along the coast at first then spreading to most areas.

Outlook: For Friday afternoon thru to Saturday afternoon is for cloudy conditions with some outbreak of showers and thunderstorms over most areas during the afternoon, then increaseing during Friday night into Saturday morning.

Flood Report and Forecast for September 9, 2021

River Conditions

REGION 7 - Levels recorded today on the RIO HONDO at Blue Creek North are below normal and continues decrease; and at Santa Cruz, San Antonio, San Roman and Douglas to the Coast levels are near normal and steady. On the NEW RIVER, levels at Tower Hill and Caledonia levels are normal and steady.

REGION 9 - On the MACAL RIVER, reservoir levels at all BECOL facilities remains below the spillways; and at San Ignacio, levels are below the low-level bridge and steady. Levels on the MOPAN RIVER at Benque Viejo Town are near normal and continues decrease.

The BELIZE RIVER at Double Run is near normal and have increased minimally. On the CROOKED TREE LAGOON, lagoon levels remain below the causeway and continues to increase slowly.

REGION 11 - The SIBUN RIVER at Freetown Sibun is now below normal and continues to decrease slowly. Levels on the SOUTHERN LAGOON Gales Point Village is normal and steady. Levels on the watersheds on the EASTERN SLOPES OF THE MAYAN MOUNTAINS is normal and steady. The SITTEE RIVER at Kendal Bridge is near normal and continues decrease slowly. On the Swasey and Bladen branches of the MONKEY RIVER, levels are above normal and decreasing slowly. On the DEEP RIVER at Medina Bank, levels continue to decrease. The RIO GRANDE at San Pedro Columbia and Big Falls South is above normal and slowly decreasing. On the MOHO RIVER at Blue Creek South and Jordan, levels are above normal and decreasing slowly. On the TEMASH RIVER at Crique Sarco, levels are above normal and decreasing slowly.

REGION 13 - On the SARSTOON RIVER, levels are normal and steady.

FLOOD FORECAST

So crazy how dragonfruit grow - it's actually a parasite or maybe an epiphyte? I got a few cuttings a few years ago and they kinda just spread around on the ground. We finally moved them to grow on a tree. Here are our 2 plants. Photo by San Pedro Scoop
