A section of Coral Angel Street was blocked as police investigate a shooting Tuesday evening. A man was reportedly shot shortly after 5:30PM. Residents in the area said they heard two loud bangs.
The victim, Nelson Zetina, 31, was transported to the island's polyclinic. His condition is unknown at this moment. Unconfirmed information is that the patient was airlifted to Belize City.
The shooting victim has been identified as Nelson Noe Zetina, 31 years, D.O.B. 12.01.1990 Belizean Laborer of Barrier Reef Drive, San Pedro Town. He was transported to the San Pedro Poly Clinic with a graze wound to the left side of his head and right leg where he was listed in Critical but Stable condition. He was flown to KHMH via BERT air ambulance. The alleged shooter, Jairo Sandoval 20yrs Dob 17th May 2000 Belizean Tour Guide of Ely Sub Division, handed in himself with his licensed firearm and is being processed at this time.
Thirty-one-year-old Noe Nelson Zetina (in picture), Belizean Laborer of Barrier Reef Drive, San Pedro Town, has been identified as the victim of yesterday's shooting on Ambergris Caye.
He was transported to the San Pedro Poly Clinic with a graze wound to the left side of his head and right leg where he was listed in a critical, but stable condition. He was later flown to the Karl Heusner Memoral Hospital in Belize City via BERT air ambulance.
The alleged shooter, Twenty-year-old Belizean tour guide, Jairo Sandoval, has handed himself to authorities with his licensed firearm and is being processed at this time.
According to Police Reports: "Initial investigation revealed that at about 5:20 p.m., Noe was at the Saca chispas Football field located at the Corner of Angel Coral Street and Buccaneer Street, socializing with a friend when he was approached by a known male person who pulled out a firearm and fired several shots towards his direction causing his injuries.
The family of thirty-one-year-old Noe Zetina is hopeful that he will make a full recovery after being shot on Tuesday. Zetina was shot to the face yesterday evening as he conversed with a friend near the Sacachispa Football Field. It was just after five o'clock when the two men were approached by the gunman whom they recognized. Moments later Zetina was grazed to the head and shot to the right leg resulting in him being transported via air ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, the perpetrator who is a tour guide of the island has been detained and his licensed firearm has been confiscated.
Islander Jairo Sandoval arrested and charged for shooting Nelson Zetina
San Pedro Police have charged 20-year-old Jairo Fernando Sandoval for Attempted Murder, Dangerous Harm, Use of Deadly means of Harm, and Aggravated Assault. Sandoval was identified as the gunman who shot 31-year-old Noe Nelson Zetina on Independence Day, Tuesday, September 21st, at the corner of Angel Coral and Buccaneer Streets. Zetina was shot in his head and right leg. He was stabilized in San Pedro Town and then transported to Belize City, where he remains stable but critical at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.
People close to Sandoval claim Sandoval was somehow being attacked and acted in self-defense. They hope this is proven when the case goes to court. Sandoval is expected to be arraigned at the San Pedro Magistrate Court tomorrow, September 23rd.
