Marine Conditions:

The Caribbean Sea

Recent satellite-derived wind data show fresh to locally strong trades in the E and central Caribbean, with the strongest winds occurring offshore NW Colombia. Strong trades are also noted within 100 nm to the south of Hispaniola. Moderate or weaker trades prevail elsewhere. Seas of 5-7 ft prevail in the south- central Caribbean, with 3-5 ft elsewhere, except in the lee of Cuba where seas of 1-3 ft are found.

Scattered showers are thunderstorms are affecting the Caribbean plains of Nicaragua. A diffluent pattern aloft is helping to sustain this convective activity. Patches of low level moisture with embedded showers are observed elsewhere.

For the forecast, the fresh to locally strong winds across the basin are forecast to diminish beginning today as high pressure north of the area shifts east, ahead of a cold front moving off NE Florida today. Winds and seas will further diminish early next week, ahead of a stronger cold front moving through the Gulf of Mexico Mon. The front will reach the Yucatan Channel by late Mon night and extend from eastern Cuba to the Gulf of Honduras by late Tue. Fresh to locally strong winds and building seas are expected in the behind the front.

A new cold front is moving over the northern part of Mexico. expect rains on the Yucatan Peninsula, western part of Cuba and the North Central America countries especially in Guatemala, Belize, where rains can be stronger and a decrease on the coast north of Honduras and the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. This is due to a trough that moves over the Yucatan peninsula and the approach of the cold front that will generate instability.

The Atlantic remains relatively quiet with no signs of organized tropical activity. Current satellite-derived wind data suggests strong vertical wind shear continues to dominate most of the Atlantic basin.

There is a lot of High level SW winds forming cloud, presently mainly over the Gulf and Nicaragua, but a little over Guatamala, Honduras and Belize. The Caribbean winds are coming in from the NE, causing a few small rain showers in a few parts of Belize.

Looks as if today will still be a cloudy day, after the Fog has gone, some occasional sun but only a small chance of rain.

Cold front number 9 is located on the Gulf of Mexico. It is not expected to directly affect the Yucatan Peninsula. However, an associated trough will bring rain this weekend.
