The Caribbean Sea

Satellite derived wind data provide observations of fresh to strong trade winds in the south-central Caribbean, and in the Gulf of Venezuela. Moderate to fresh trades dominate the E basin as well as the SW Caribbean and Gulf of Honduras, with gentle E winds elsewhere in the NW Caribbean. Seas are 8 to 10 ft in the south- central Caribbean, with highest seas near the coast of Colombia, 5-7 ft in the central and eastern basin, and 3 to 5 ft in the NW Caribbean, except in the lee of Cuba where seas of 1-3 ft are noted. The trades will continue to carry isolated to scattered passing showers.

For the forecast, the pressure gradient between a ridge across the northern Caribbean Sea and the Colombian/Panamanian low will continue to support fresh to strong trade winds over the south- central Caribbean and in the Gulf of Venezuela through Fri night. Moderate to fresh trades will prevail elsewhere. High pressure will strengthen over the western Atlantic by tonight, and fresh to locally strong NE winds will develop in the Windward Passage, the lee of Cuba and S of Hispaniola through Mon night.

A new cold front will enter the general region on Thursday, December 9, and will subsequently move over the north, northeast, east and southeast of Mexico in the next few days, so it will change the weather. Although the front will be weak, it will favor some showers, scattered rains and a moderate drop in temperatures, making it likely that this front will strengthen and reach Cuba, and the countries of the North Central America at the beginning of next week. A notable decrease in temperatures will give a cooling to the temperatures, which in these days remain dry and stable due to the influence of high pressure. The front will also cause rains on Guatemala, Belize, the north coast of Honduras and the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua in the coming days.

On Ambergris Caye this morning we had a little sprinkling of rain earlier but blue skies now. The wind is blowing at 14 mph from the East making rough sea conditions around our barrier reef. Today's expected high temperature is 86 f.

The easterly Caribbean winds have a fair amount of cloud and there is patches of high level over Belize from the west, some clashing and quite a few scattered small rain showers around.

Looks like another mixed day, a fair bit of sunshine, but alos a lot of cloud, and a high chance of the odd rain shower.

Temperatures in Belmopan : ( Coast usually cooler, hills even cooler )
Last Night 23°C 74°F Yesterday max. 30°C 86°F Yesterday Rain 13.9 mm ( 0.6") Over Night Rain 0.3 mm ( 0" )
