Murdered for a Bike in San Pedro

Two murders were recorded over the weekend: one on Ambergris Caye and the other in Orange Walk. The first occurred on Saturday night in San Pedro Town when Hilberto Caliz was killed. Tonight, sources confirm with News Five that an eighteen-year-old Julio Paiz has been charged for the killing and will be arraigned on Tuesday in Belize City. But was Caliz killed over a bicycle? News Five's Duane Moody reports.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Hilberto Caliz was a carpenter and footballer, but on Saturday night, he was gunned down a few feet from his home in the San Pedrito area of San Pedro Town. The thirty-six-year-old was heading home when he was ambushed by a gunman and shot several times. His girlfriend who spoke to us off camera said she heard the shots and witnessed the cold-blooded killing of her partner.

Voice of: Girlfriend of Deceased

"I thought that it was pop shots like how Christmas soon come. Then I saw the neighbour running ina fu he yard. And then I peep and I see somebody else running ina di yard too and then I saw my bwai was running and I saw the person that killed him running and shooting him. And he drop right there and the bwai still come and continue shooting him."

Edilberto Caliz, Brother of Deceased

"Nobody wants to really talk, nobody wants to say anything. I don't blame them, but there is a God above. To what they told us, the guy came out of a fence, started shooting at him, my brother fell. He tried to run, but he was caught and when he was on the gun, they say the guy just came and shot him for the last time."

The Caliz family is devastated, but Hilberto's youngest brother, Edilberto spoke on behalf of the family. He shared a bit of what happened that evening.

Edilberto Caliz

"Nobody wants to really talk, nobody wants to say anything. I don't blame them, but there is a God above. To what they told us, the guy came out of a fence, started shooting at him, my brother fell. He tried to run, but he was caught and when he was on the gun, they say the guy just came and shot him for the last time. He was never a bad person, always made you laugh, shared jokes; he's always worried about everybody else. My brother didn't owe anybody anything. Just recently, I could say that he did change his life; he used to drink a lot. He quit lotta drinking, dedicated to work. He was all about settling down, finally got the job he wanted. And what hurts the most is that it happened just before my mom's birthday. So my brother didn't owe anybody anything mien; it's not fair."

The shooter was quickly apprehended by police. To everyone's surprise, the attacker was well-known to the deceased as they worked together. It is believed that the incident stems from this bike… the shooter had reportedly stolen a bicycle belonging to Hilberto's girlfriend. Hilberto confronted him, but was then threatened.

Voice of: Girlfriend

"That day we came that we get the bike, that he get the bike because they give the bike to he. We never know dah that bwai mi have it. We come in here and I told him thank god we find the bike. He tell me yes babe, I tell ahn but the bwai threaten me. Ih tell me lef ahn, he noh wah do nothing. Ih just dah wah young bwai, he can’t do nothing. But I neva know that he mi wha kill my."

Edilberto Caliz

"We as the family know weh happen, but we can’t take justice ina fi we hands so we have to be patient and make the law do ih job and hopefully we get justice for my breda because it didn't take long before they caught him. So I just hope he pays for what he did to us because my brother was actually teaching him a trade for him to do that to my brother. But life goes on mien."

18 Year Old Kills 36 Year Old co Worker - In Dispute Over Bike?

Tonight an 18 year old has been charged for the murder of an 36 year old co worker on San Pedro.

Police say that Julio Rafael Paiz killed 36 year old Hilberto Sajid Caliz on Saturday evening in the San Pedrito area of the town. That's where many of the workers live - and both men had been employed at a resort. But a dispute - supposedly - over a bicycle led to murder on Saturday. Cherisse Halsall went to the island this morning:

This improvised altar has been placed here to honor the life of Hilberto Caliz. Hilberto was a son, brother, and common-law-husband who, on Saturday, was cruelly and shockingly gunned down and killed.

His Common -Law-Wife Emma Diaz watched the whole thing unfold. Still, afraid for her life she declined to appear on camera but she shared her recollection of the harrowing moments that lead to Hilberto's death.

Voice of Emma Diaz, Common-Law-Wife
"I was washing outside right here when I heard that sound and I thought that it was pop shots you know because Christmas is just around the corner and then when I saw the neighbor running into his yard, and then I peeped, I saw somebody else running into the yard too and when I saw my bwoy running and I saw the person that killed him running and shooting him. And he fell right there and the boy still came and continued shooting him."

And that's the story that Hilberto's family has received. This morning his brother's were both angry and devastated.

Eddie Caliz, Brother of the Deceased
"The guy came out of a fence, started shooting at him, my brother fell. He tried to run but he was caught. When he was on the ground they say the guy just came and shot him for the last time and that's where he was."

Aidian Caliz, Brother of the deceased
"He's very strong, I know he fought for his life, I know he ran for his life."

But what was behind the rancor? reliable reports to 7 news are that

Reports say it all started over Emma Diaz's bike. They claim It had been stolen by one of the couple's co-workers, and Hilberto had confronted him about it, demanding its return. The man refused and instead allegedly threatened both their lives. They never reported the incident.

But the trouble came when the police, somehow, got involved and returned the bike.

Voice of Emma Diaz, Common-Law-Wife
"And then I came that day, we came that day because he got the bike because they gave the bike to him, we didn't know that that guy had it and then when we came in here I told him thank god we found the bike, he told me yes babe, I told him but the boy threatened me. He told me leave him, he won't do anything, he's just a young guy, he can't do nothing but I wouldn't know that he would kill my bwoy."

Hilberto's family says that the alleged killer was someone Hilberto called a friend. They claim that Hilberto, a carpenter, taught him everything he knows.

Eddie Caliz, Brother of the Deceased
"We can't take justice in our own hands so we just have to be patient and wait to have the law do its job and hopefully we get justice for my brother because it didn't take long before they caught him right, so I just hope he pays for what he did to us, mein cause my brother was actually teaching him a trade, for him to do that to my brother."

He did it to their brother and to their entire family but especially to Hilberto's mother.

Aidian Caliz, Brother of the deceased
"We have no words to try to calm her down because she is very broken right now, and worse that she hasn't seen any of us yet, that's the craziest part because when she sees us she's going to break apart because all of us are broken even my dad he can barely sleep."

Aidian Caliz, Brother of the deceased
"Now I'm the oldest one that follows him and I'll try to do my best to do what I can do for my brothers and I'll always be there for them and I just want to make my brother know that I will never forget him. I will always have him in my heart, Love you Hil."

Police Caught Murder Suspect Quickly

Today, police said they responded quickly and detained the suspect shortly after the killing. Here's how the communications officer laid it out for the media today:

ASP FitzRoy Yearwood, Communications Officer
"Police responded to an area in San Pedrito, San Pedro Town in an unknown street where they saw the body of Hilberto Caliz, a carpenter, apparently dead. We received information that he was riding from home in that area when he was approach by another Hispanic male person who fired several shots at him. We have that other person already in custody and we are hoping to bring some form of charges to him soon. The motive of that shooting is still unknown to police, but quick police respond led us to detain one person that we believe is the orchestrator of that crime."

"The information that we gathered is that he was just riding home from work on what you would call the usual route that he takes, because we know that he was a contractor and this is just his normal routine when he was attacked."

Reporter
"It was suggested to us that surveillance footage in the area may have captured some element of this gun attack on tape. Is there any accuracy to that?"

ASP FitzRoy Yearwood, Communications Officer
"Like I said we have one person detained and hopefully that the investigators can put it together properly and we would see whether or not charges would be levied."

This evening, police confirmed that they had formally arrested and charged Julio Rafael Paiz, an 18- year-old, Belizean Unemployed of San Pedro Town for the crime of Murder.

Julio Rafael Paiz charged with the murder of Hilberto Caliz

Another San Pedrano fell victim to gun violence on Saturday, December 11th. Hilberto Caliz, 36, a carpenter of the San Pedrito area, was ambushed and gunned down just a few feet from his home. The same day police apprehended the gunman, Julio Rafael Paiz, an 18- year-old unemployed Belizean of San Pedro Town. On Monday, December 13th, police formally arrested and charged Paiz for the crime of Murder. He is to be arraigned in Belize City on Tuesday, December 14th. Paiz, a friend and co-worker of Caliz's, reportedly threatened him and his girlfriend Emma recently over a bicycle issue.

According to witnesses familiar with the issue, it all started with a bicycle. The accused had reportedly stolen a bike belonging to Hilberto and Emma. Hilberto confronted him about the bike, which led to threats to their lives. Emma was advised to file a report to the police, but they did not expect the situation to escalate to murder. According to her, Hilberto told her that it was just a young guy who would not do anything. That evening on Saturday, Emma said she was doing home chores when all of a sudden she heard the explosions. "I thought that it was pop shots (firecrackers), then I saw the neighbor running into his yard, and then I saw my bwai (partner) running," she said. "I saw the person shooting him. He dropped right there, and his attacker continued shooting him." Witnesses said the gunman had emerged from behind a fence and made sure Hilberto was dead by shooting him several times, even when he was on the ground. The shooter tried to escape, but the police quickly detained him.
