The Caribbean Sea

Most of the basin is void of convection, but a band of scattered moderate thunderstorms extents within about 60 nm of a cold front that is crossing the Yucatan Channel and extends SW along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Convection previously associated with the eastern extension of the East Pacific monsoon trough in the far SW Caribbean has diminished and moved inland over Panama and portions of Colombia.

With the cold front approaching the basin, the pressure gradient between higher pressure to the north and lower pressure over South American has been disrupted and relaxed. This has allowed for trades to diminish some overnight, and now moderate trades dominate the central and eastern basin, with light to gentle winds in the west. Seas range from 3 to 6 ft in the central, east, and southwest, with heights averaging 1 to 3 ft in the NW.

For the forecast, a cold front will move into the NW Caribbean today, then gradually stall from the Windward Passage to offshore Nicaragua for the latter part the week. Fresh N winds can be expected behind the front. Otherwise, a relatively weak pressure gradient will lead to diminished trades much of the week, with generally moderate E wind expected.

The cold front is passing over Belize and is presently slowly pushing into the Caribbean, and has stopped the Caribbean easterly winds in their tracks. The band of mid and high level cloud associated with this cold front is now over Belize.

Looks as if today will be mainly cloudy to heavy cloud for most of us for most of the day, a few brighter periods for some and a posibility of the odd rain shower.

Temperatures in Belmopan : ( Coast usually cooler, hills even cooler )
Last Night 24°C 74°F Yesterday max. 30°C 85°F Yesterday Rain 0 mm ( 0") Over Night Rain 0 mm ( 0" )

The cloud cover from cold front is now way out in the sea, pushing the Caribbean winds away from Belize. There is a trace of something coming up form the south, off Honduras, but most action is the high level from the WNW causing a lot of cloud, and possibly the chance of a few rain showers.

The cold front #Huchim (no. 14) is located above the center of the Yucatan Peninsula. Gradually colder air will invade the region, bringing "coldness" at nights and dusk.

Happy first day of winter...and the shortest day of the year.

Present Condition: Mostly cloudy skies, including in San Pedro as a cold front moves through. A cold front will cross the country tonight, with relatively cool and dry weather to follow. Operators of small crafts are advised to exercise caution for locally gusty winds and rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms.

24hr Forecast: Skies will be cloudy at times along with a few showers, thunderstorms, and periods of light rain around the country this afternoon, and then mostly over southern and offshore areas tonight and tomorrow morning.

Outlook: For Wednesday afternoon through to midday on Thursday is for fair and mild weather to prevail. Little or no rainfall is expected.
