The Caribbean Sea
A broad low pressure trough extending across Cuba has disrupted
the pressure gradient causing the winds to decrease below average
for January. Recent scatterometer, altimeter and buoy data reveal
mainly gentle to moderate winds and 3-5 ft seas across the
majority of the Caribbean. A fresh NE breeze remains off the
coast of Colombia with 4-6 ft seas.
For the forecast, no significant changes expected. There are no
Areas with significant convection across the basin. The fresh to
strong trade winds near the coast of Colombia have diminished
tonight. Moderate to fresh winds will prevail through the end
of the week and into the weekend. Gentle to moderate winds are
expected elsewhere across the basin.
For this weekend a new cold front is expected to come to strengthen the weather conditions Starting Saturday morning a new cold front will move over the north, northeast and south of Mexico during the end of the week coming on Sunday to the Yucatan Peninsula during the day. This front can reach the countries of North Central America next week. The cold air is shown in the picture in purple blue.
The cool air from the north was pushing back down yesterday afternoon and has taken over the whole area over night. The Caribbean winds have been pushed well away, there is significant high level winds and cloud clashing, presently off shore, causing significant rain out at sea.
There is still fog and low cloud around, but that will be thinning so a fair amount of sunshine today, with some cloud and probably little or no rain.
Temperatures in Belmopan : ( Coast usually cooler, hills even cooler ) Last Night 21°C 71°F Yesterday max. 27°C 81°F Yesterday Rain 5.2mm ( 0.2") Over Night Rain 1.8mm ( 0.1" )
Present Condition: Mostly clear along the shorelines and in the north. More clouds in the interior of the mainland. Drier conditions will settle over the area during the next 24 to 48 hours.
24hr Forecast: Mostly sunny during the daytime and partly cloudy tonight. Showers will be isolated, except for a few more over central and inland areas this afternoon, then over some southern coastal and offshore areas tonight.
Outlook: For Friday afternoon through to midday Saturday is for mainly fair weather.
The day was a beauty. At sundown, a squadron of Pelicans await the fishermen arriving home, while a Yellow Crowned Night Heron lays still, waiting for its prey to pass along. Ambergris Caye has beauty all around. Photos by Marlena Gomez
